Home dish or travel dish: the plan rule decides
Starlink sells four consumer kits in the US, and the plan rules sort them faster than the specs do. The V5 is a home dish: Starlink says it is not intended for in-motion use and Standby Mode is not available for V5 hardware. The Mini is a travel dish: it is the only kit with USB-C power, and in most of the US it is sold with Roam plans rather than Residential. The Standard 4 X is the one kit that does both, which is why it wins for people who split the year between a house and a camper. The Performance (Gen 3) is the boat and storm dish at ten times the Mini's price.
Gen 3, V4, V5, Mini X: what the names mean
Starlink renamed its dishes in 2026. The kit forums call Gen 3 is now Standard 4 (with Router Mini) or Standard 4 X (with Router 3), and Starlink's own comparison page calls that dish the V4. There is no Gen 4 dish; the next one is the V5, which went on sale in select US areas in July 2026. The Mini X is a Mini with a second router in the box, sold in Argentina and Germany rather than the US. The full shape-by-shape identification table is in the decoder guide linked below.
Power is the spec that decides a travel kit
Starlink's spec sheets list 25 to 40 W for the Mini, 35 to 50 W for the V5, 75 to 100 W for the Standard 4 X, and 75 to 100 W for the Performance (Gen 3). Only the Mini takes USB-C, and Starlink says it needs a 100 W (20 V/5 A) USB Power Delivery source and will not work below 65 W. The Standard and V5 need mains power, so in a vehicle they run through an inverter. The Performance kit's Advanced Power Supply accepts 12 to 56 V DC directly.

Which Starlink should I buy for camping and road trips?
The Starlink Mini. It is the only Starlink with a USB-C power path (a 100 W USB-C power bank runs it), it has a built-in router, it weighs 1.1 kg, and Starlink approves it for in-motion use on Roam plans. Between trips you can park it on Standby Mode instead of paying for a full month.
Which Starlink is best for home internet?
If your address can order the V5, that is the simplest home kit: it draws 35 to 50 W, weighs 1.1 kg, and comes with a Wi-Fi 6 Router Mini. Where the V5 is not offered, or for the faster Residential tiers, the Standard 4 X with Router 3 is the home dish. The V5 cannot be used in motion or parked on Standby Mode, so it is a home-only purchase.
Can one Starlink work at home and in an RV?
Yes, if you buy a Standard 4 X outright. It is sold with both Residential and Roam plans, Starlink approves it for in-motion use, and it can go on Standby Mode. The Mini is mostly limited to Roam plans in the US, and the V5 is Residential only.
Is the Starlink Performance kit worth $1,999?
Only for boats, vehicles that stay online at speed, or roofs in extreme weather. It has a 140 degree field of view against 110 for the other kits, an IP69K rating, 85 mm per hour of snow melt, a 3-year warranty, and a power supply that accepts 12 to 56 V DC. For a house or a campsite, the Standard 4 X or Mini does the job for a tenth of the price.
