Yes, Starlink works in snow, and you almost never have to climb up and clear it. Every dish Starlink sells today has a built-in Snow Melt feature that heats the antenna face, and every current spec sheet puts a number on it: the Mini clears up to 25 mm (1 inch) of snow an hour, the Standard 4 X and the V5 up to 40 mm (1.5 to 1.6 inches), and the Performance kit up to 85 mm (3.5 inches). The National Weather Service says “heavy snow” generally means 4 inches in 12 hours, a third of an inch an hour, and it issues a Heavy Snow Warning at 6 inches in 12 hours, half an inch an hour; even the smallest dish is rated to out-melt the warning-level storm twice over. What Snow Melt cannot do is dig out a dish that a drift has buried, and Starlink says so in its own support pages.

The two inch figures for the 40 mm dishes are Starlink’s own rounding on each sheet, 1.5 inches on the Standard 4 X sheet and 1.6 on the V5 sheet, for the same 40 mm. The Performance sheet is titled simply “Performance”; “Performance (Gen 3)” is the name Starlink’s weather page uses for the current kit. The older Standard Actuated dish, the one with a motorized mast, is not on the spec sheets above; its support page lists an average draw of 50 to 75 W and 20 W idle, and it gets its own section below because snow affects it differently. Ingress Protection (IP) ratings describe sealing against dust and water: IP67 means dust-tight and able to survive brief submersion, IP68 goes deeper, and IP69K adds resistance to high-pressure washing. The Performance sheet spells out what its ratings mean in practice: “Suitable for 1 meter of water submersion for up to 30 minutes and pressure washing.”
Does Starlink work in snow?
Starlink’s answer is a flat yes with one caveat. Its weather page says the system “is designed and tested to handle a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions including snow, hail, sleet, heavy rain, and extreme heat,” and rates the dish “to operate outdoors between -30 to +50 degrees Celsius, or -22 to +122 degrees Fahrenheit.” It adds that “during moments of extreme heat or cold, Starlink may experience slightly reduced performance.”
The caveat is burial. The snow-and-ice page is explicit: “Heavy snow completely covering the dish may cause intermittent connectivity or temporary loss of service,” and the recommended defense is placement, “installing your Starlink in a location where it is unlikely to become buried by snow or experience significant snow buildup.” A dish on a roof edge under a slide path, or on a ground stand in a drift zone, can be buried faster than any dish melts, and the warmth only reaches the face the dish can heat.
Ice is treated more calmly than most owners expect. “Light ice buildup or icicles generally do not impact performance,” the same page says.
How does Starlink Snow Melt work?
Starlink’s pages describe no separate heating element. They describe the feature as one that “automatically uses the power it draws to gently heat the dish and melt snow,” and it lives in the app as a setting, not on the dish as a part. The stated goals are to “reduce service impacts during snowfall” and “minimize the need for manual snow removal.”
Two things follow from that design. First, the melt rate on the spec sheet is a ceiling (“up to”), and the sheets state no conditions for reaching it. Second, anything that blocks the warm face from the sky, a cover, a tarp, a lean-to roof, defeats the feature. Starlink’s weather page puts it bluntly: “It is strongly recommended that you do not apply additional protective covers as this will degrade Starlink’s performance including its ability to melt snow.”
How do I turn Starlink Snow Melt on or off? The three modes
The setting is three taps deep in the app: “Open the Starlink app. Go to Settings → Starlink → Snow Melt. Select your preferred mode.” Starlink’s own descriptions of the modes, word for word:

The practical difference between Automatic and Pre-heat is timing. Automatic waits for the dish to detect snow and then heats; Pre-heat keeps the face warm before the flakes land, which is what Starlink means by “better resist snow buildup.” That is the mode for a roof dish you cannot reach during a storm, and the one to switch off again when the storm passes if your power is metered by the watt-hour.
How much power does Starlink Snow Melt use?
Starlink publishes average power draw per dish, and the support page is candid that “the power utilization can vary depending on the temperature, location, and utilization of the Starlink.” The published averages, which include the router, power supply and cables: Standard Actuated 50 to 75 W with a 20 W idle; Standard 4, Standard 4 X and Enterprise 75 to 100 W with a 20 W idle; Mini 20 to 40 W with a 15 W idle; Performance Gen 1 and Gen 2 110 to 150 W with a 45 W idle. The newer Performance (Gen 3) spec sheet lists a lower 75 to 100 W average, and the V5 sheet 35 to 50 W.
What Starlink does not publish is a separate wattage for Snow Melt. None of the five current spec sheets and none of the three winter support pages state how many extra watts Automatic or Pre-heat adds; the only official statement is that Pre-heat “may increase power consumption.” Several blogs quote measured figures from their own meters. Those are measurements of one dish on one day, not a spec, and they are not repeated here as if they were one.
For a dish on grid power the question is academic. For a dish on a battery it decides how long the night lasts, and the honest way to plan it is with the published averages and a margin:

Those are capacity divided by draw. Starlink notes its figures “are based on AC input power averages,” so they already include the wall brick; a power station’s inverter adds its own losses on top, which will take a slice off every row, while a Mini fed DC from a USB-C port skips the brick entirely. In snow, plan for the right-hand column and add Pre-heat’s unpublished extra on top; if the station has to last a full night, Automatic is the setting to leave it on. One more winter power rule, for Mini owners on USB-C: Starlink’s page on powering the Mini says “You will need a USB Power Delivery (“PD”) source with a rating of 100W (20V/5A) for the Starlink Mini to operate optimally. Starlink Mini will not work with USB PD ratings below 65W (12-48V).” A weak power bank that runs the Mini fine in July is the first thing to suspect when it drops out on a cold night with Snow Melt working.
Does the Starlink Mini have Snow Melt?
Yes. If a guide tells you the Mini is too small and battery-friendly to melt snow, its own specification sheet says otherwise: it lists “Snow Melt Capability: Up to 25mm / hour (1 in / hour),” and the Mini X sheet, which is the same dish sold with a Router Mini, lists the identical figure. The Mini’s rating is the lowest of the current lineup, at a little over half the Standard 4 X’s 40 mm, which fits a dish whose sheet lists a 25 to 40 W average (Starlink’s support page says 20 to 40 W) against the Standard’s 75 to 100.
The Mini’s operating range is the same -30 °C to 50 °C as the home dishes, and its IP67 rating carries a condition worth reading twice: it applies “with DC Power Cable and Starlink Plug/Cable installed,” and the sheet adds, “This product is no longer rated IP67 with a standard RJ45 cable.” A Mini wired with an ordinary Ethernet cable through its port is not the sealed dish the rating describes, which matters more in sleet than in sun. How fast does Starlink melt snow, against a real storm?
Snowfall forecasts are given in inches per storm, not millimeters an hour, so here is the conversion. The National Weather Service glossary says heavy snow “generally means” snowfall “accumulating to 4” or more in depth in 12 hours or less; or snowfall accumulating to 6” or more in depth in 24 hours or less.” Its Heavy Snow Warning is stricter: “snowfall of 6 inches (15 cm) or more in 12 hours or 8 inches (20 cm) or more in 24 hours,” with the note that “these criteria are specific for the Midwest and may vary regionally.” Four inches in 12 hours averages 0.33 inches an hour; the warning’s six in 12 averages 0.5.
Against the warning rate every current dish is rated with room to spare: the Mini’s 1 inch an hour is twice it, the 40 mm dishes are about three times it, and the Performance kit’s 3.5 inches an hour is seven times it. Storms do not fall at their average, though; the bursts that bury a dish are the hours that run at several times the storm’s mean, and wet snow near the freezing point clings where dry powder slides off. That is the gap between “up to 25 mm an hour” on a sheet and a Mini on a ground tripod that went dark at 2 a.m. The rating tells you the dish can keep up with the storm as forecast; it cannot promise it keeps up with the hour that beat the forecast, or with the drift that came sideways.
Starlink not working in snow: the fix ladder
Work down this list in order. Each step is either Starlink’s own instruction or the check that its documents imply.
- Look at the dish before you touch the app. If it is under snow, that is the problem, whatever the setting says. Starlink: “If you choose to remove snow or ice, you may do so gently at any time. Do not use tools such as picks, chisels, or scrapers, as these can damage your Starlink.” A soft broom or a gloved hand, from the bottom edge up so the snow slides off rather than into the mount.
- Check the Snow Melt setting. Settings → Starlink → Snow Melt in the app. If it reads Off, set it to Automatic; if the snow is wet and the dish is out of reach, Pre-heat. A dish that was set up in August on a battery may well have been left on Off to save power.
- Check the power. Melting snow takes watts. Mini owners on USB-C need a 100 W PD source, and the Mini will not run at all below 65 W. On any dish, a power station that has sagged near empty in the cold will drop the dish before it drops the lights.
- Remove anything you put over it. Covers, domes and tarps degrade the dish, “including its ability to melt snow.”
- If the app says “motors blocked,” you have an actuated dish. See the next section.
- If the dish is clear, powered and set correctly, the snow is not on your dish. Heavy snow loads bend the tree branches in the field of view down into it, and a satellite dish that has a clear sky in September can have an obstructed one in January. Re-run the obstruction check in the app from the dish’s actual mounting spot.
“Motors blocked”: the actuated-dish problem
The Standard Actuated dish is the one with motors. Starlink says its “initial set up uses a built-in motor for motorized self-orientation,” and that its profile “is thicker due to the built-in motors and mast”; once aligned, both it and the Standard 4 X track satellites electronically, “without the need to physically move.” The current Standard 4 X, the V5 and the Mini all list “Software Assisted Manual Orienting” on their spec sheets: you aim them once by hand with the app, and they have no motors to block.
For the motorized dish, snow on the face is rarely the issue, but ice at the base can be. Starlink: “For actuated models, snow or ice buildup typically does not affect service. In rare cases: Ice or snow around the base may prevent the dish motors from repositioning. You may see a ‘motors blocked’ alert in the Starlink app. If this occurs, gently clearing ice or icicles around the base may allow the dish to move again. This should be uncommon.” The fix is at the mast, not the face, and the same no-picks rule applies.
Starlink in winter: the temperature limits, indoors and out
The dish is the tough part of the kit. Every current dish is rated to at least -30 °C (-22 °F), and the Performance kit to -40 °C (-40 °F).
The indoor gear is where Starlink’s documents disagree with each other, and the disagreement is worth knowing if your router lives in an unheated shed. The weather support page says “the router and power supply are also rated to operate indoors between 0 to +30 degrees Celsius, or +32 to +86 degrees Fahrenheit.” The current Standard 4 X spec sheet, by contrast, rates the Router 3 for -30 °C to 50 °C and its power supply for -30 °C to 60 °C. Neither document carries a date, so there is no way to tell which is current. The safe reading is the narrower one until Starlink reconciles them: keep the router and power supply somewhere that stays above freezing, which also keeps their cable connections dry.
For anyone who needs the widest margins, Starlink’s own recommendation is the pricier kit: “For those who need higher performance in extreme weather conditions, we recommend Starlink Performance (Gen 3).”

Can Starlink get snow on it? Yes, and it is designed to clear it. Snow that lands on a powered dish with Snow Melt on Automatic or Pre-heat melts at up to the rate on your dish’s spec sheet; snow that buries the whole dish can cause “intermittent connectivity or temporary loss of service” until it is cleared.
What temperature does Starlink Snow Melt turn on at? Starlink does not publish a temperature threshold. Its description of Automatic mode is that the dish “detects snowy conditions and heats only when needed.”
Should I turn Snow Melt off to save power? Only if it does not snow where the dish is. Off “will not use extra power,” and Automatic only heats when it detects snow, so the saving from Off is limited to the hours it would otherwise have been melting. Does the Starlink Mini’s Snow Melt drain a power bank? It draws from the same 20 to 40 W average budget, and Starlink says draw varies with temperature. Budget for the top of the range in snow, and use a 100 W PD source.
Does snow on trees affect Starlink? Starlink’s winter pages talk about snow on the dish, not around it. Anything between the dish and the sky is an obstruction, and heavy snow can bend branches into a field of view that was clear in September; the obstruction tool in the app is the way to check.
Does Starlink work in a snowstorm? During the storm itself, heavy snow that fully covers the dish is Starlink’s stated cause of intermittent service, so the dish that keeps working is the one mounted where snow slides off and drifts cannot reach it. What to do before the first storm
Set Snow Melt to Automatic now, while you can still reach the dish. Walk outside and look at where the snow from the roof, the trees and the plow will end up, and move the dish if any of it lands on the mount. If the dish runs from a battery, size the station for the top of the dish’s average draw and a long night, and keep the router and power supply above freezing. Then leave the broom in the garage; the dish’s job is to make it unnecessary, and on any current model it is rated to do that at twice the rate of a storm that earns a Heavy Snow Warning.
