The short answer
A Level 2 home charger, the 240-volt wall box that refills an electric vehicle (EV) overnight, costs $449 to $600 from the makers as of September 8, 2026: Emporia’s Classic is $449 with a J1772 plug or $479 with the Tesla-style NACS plug, Tesla’s Wall Connector is $535, and Tesla’s Universal Wall Connector, which charges any EV, is $600. The electrician is the bigger line. Qmerit, a national EV-charger installer network, put the all-in cost of a Level 2 installation at $749 to $2,500 with an average of $1,700 in its March 2026 guide, and a second installer, Treehouse, quoted $1,500 to $2,750 the same month. If your panel needs an upgrade, add $1,500 to $3,000 by Qmerit’s figure, or $1,500 to $5,000 and up by Treehouse’s.
The federal tax credit is where installer pages go stale. The 30 percent credit, capped at $1,000, ended for any charger placed in service after June 30, 2026. Of the nine installer and vendor guides that ranked for this query on September 8, 2026, one still advertised the credit as available with no end date, one called it current but expiring, four never mentioned it, and three reported it gone. If a quote arrives with “30% federal credit” on it, the quote is out of date, and the section below explains what is left.

Those ranges are two installers’ national figures from this spring, not a quote. Labor rates, permit fees and the distance from your panel to your parking spot move the total more than the brand of charger does, so get three written quotes and treat the table as the sanity check for them. The biggest line, the panel upgrade, is also the one you can most often avoid: under the 2023 electrical code, a charger that throttles itself when the house is busy can be sized to the panel you already have, and the section on 100-amp panels below shows how the makers build that in.
Is there still a federal tax credit for EV chargers in 2026?
No. The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit, Section 30C of the tax code, paid “30% of the cost of the property up to a maximum credit of $1,000 per item” for home charging equipment, but only for property placed in service “from January 1, 2023, to June 30, 2026.” The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) instructions for Form 8911, revised December 2025, spell out what happened: “P.L. 119-21, commonly known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act changed the termination date for the section 30C alternative fuel vehicle refueling property credit from December 31, 2032, to June 30, 2026,” and “You can’t claim the credit for alternative fuel vehicle refueling property placed in service after June 30, 2026.” The IRS’s own FAQ on the law lists the credit among the eight energy provisions it cut short.
“Placed in service” is the date that matters, not the date you bought the box. The instructions define it as “when it is ready and available for a specific use, regardless of whether or not it is actually used at the time.” A charger that an electrician energized on June 28 qualifies and gets claimed on Form 8911 with the 2026 return; one energized July 2 does not.
Two details make the loss smaller than it looks. First, the credit never applied everywhere: “Property placed in service after 2022 will not be treated as qualified alternative fuel vehicle refueling property unless it was placed in service in an eligible census tract,” which the IRS defines as “a low-income community census tract or non-urban census tract.” Eligibility was decided tract by tract, and Rewiring America’s guide describes the people who qualified as “Americans living in eligible low-income or non-urban communities.” Second, the credit was capped at $1,000, and even applied to every dollar of Qmerit’s $1,700 average install it would have topped out near $510: real money, but not the difference between doing the job and not. If you already have the paperwork for a pre-July install, file it. If you do not, price the job without it.
As of September 8, 2026, the IRS credit page (last reviewed May 26, 2026) and the Form 8911 instructions both carry the June 30 date and no later one. The same law ended the $7,500 vehicle credit nine months earlier; the Tesla tax credit guide walks through what survived on the car side.
What utility rebates are left?
Utilities, not Washington, D.C., are now where the charger money is, and each program has its own rule book. Puget Sound Energy (PSE), the utility for most of the Seattle suburbs, is a representative example read on September 8, 2026: “Up to $300 for a qualifying EV home charger,” rising to “Up to $600 rebate for a qualifying EV home charger and up to $2,000 towards installation costs” for income-qualified households. The strings attached are typical of the category. The charger must be an “ENERGY STAR Smart Level 2 charger that is prequalified by PSE” and connected to Wi-Fi, you “Must currently own, lease, or have ordered an EV (electric vehicle) or PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle),” the application “must be submitted within 60 days of home charger installation,” and there is “One rebate per qualified single-family residence within a 5-year window.” The income tier is defined by county: households “whose gross monthly household income is less than or equal to maximum limits for their county.”
Three lessons carry to any utility. Check the approved-charger list before you buy, because a rebate that requires a specific model list turns a $449 charger into the wrong charger. Check the deadline, since 60 days from installation passes quickly while you are waiting on a final inspection. And check the “already own or ordered an EV” clause; some programs will not pay for a charger installed ahead of the car. The Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center keeps a searchable list of state and utility programs, and your utility’s own page is the authority on amounts, which change every program year.
What breaker size do you need for a Level 2 charger?
Every Level 2 charger is a continuous load, and the National Electrical Code (NEC) treats it as one. Section 625.42 of the 2023 code says “Electric vehicle charging loads shall be considered to be continuous loads for the purposes of this article.” ChargePoint’s installation guide translates the consequence: “Home Flex is a continuous load device. The circuit must be rated for 125% of the maximum load.” Turn that around and a charger may draw only 80 percent of its breaker, which is why a 48-amp charger needs a 60-amp breaker: 48 times 1.25 is 60. Tesla’s Universal Wall Connector manual publishes the whole ladder.

The breaker, current and kilowatt columns are Tesla’s table; the miles column is ChargePoint’s estimate for its own charger, and it depends on the car. Tesla says its Wall Connector adds “Up to 44 mi of range added per hour at 11.5 kW / 48 amp output depending on vehicle.” ChargePoint claims “up to 37 miles of range per hour” at 50 amps, which its install guide pairs with a 70- or 80-amp hardwired circuit.
Before you pay for the 60-amp version of anything, check what your car can accept. Tesla’s shop page carries a footnote that is easy to miss: “Maximum charge rate for Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive, Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive and Model Y All-Wheel Drive is 32 A (7.7 kW) - up to 30 miles of range per hour.” Tesla’s manual table prints the same 32 amps as 7.6 kW; 32 amps at 240 volts is 7,680 watts, so the two are one number rounded two ways. A 40-amp circuit gives those three variants everything they can use. The manual says the same thing in general terms: “Some Tesla vehicles may draw less current than the max output. Actual charging rate depends on Wall Connector output and onboard charger in the vehicle.” A 60-amp circuit is still a reasonable choice if you plan to own the house longer than the car, but it is a choice, not a requirement.
Wire size follows the breaker. For the full 48-amp output, Tesla’s manual specifies “For 75°C rated circuit breaker, use minimum 6AWG, 90°C THWN-2-rated copper wire for conductors,” and 4 AWG if the breaker is only rated for 60°C. AWG is American Wire Gauge; a smaller number is a thicker wire, and 6 AWG copper is the reason a long run from the panel to a detached garage costs what it does.
Plug-in NEMA 14-50 or hardwired?
A NEMA 14-50 is the four-prong 240-volt outlet, the same one an electric range uses, and plugging a charger into one sounds like the cheap, portable option. Since the 2020 code it comes with a catch. NEC 625.54 reads: “In addition to the requirements in 210.8, all receptacles installed for the connection of electric vehicle charging shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel.” Leviton’s code guide notes that “Beginning with the 2020 NEC, all receptacle outlets installed for the connection of electric vehicle charging will be required to be provided with GFCI protection for personnel (regardless of the receptacle outlet’s location).”
A ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) trips when it sees current leaking to ground. The problem is that the charger already has one. Tesla’s manual describes “Integrated ground fault circuit interruption (GFCI) protection” inside the unit. ChargePoint’s guide is blunter about what happens when two of them watch the same circuit: it asks the electrician to fit “a new, dedicated, non-GFCI two-pole circuit breaker,” then adds, “If local codes require a GFCI breaker for plug-in installation, ChargePoint recommends a hardwire installation. We do not recommend using a GFCI breaker as the Home Flex has charging circuit interrupting device (CCID) protection. Using a GFCI breaker in the panel can cause nuisance tripping.” Qmerit’s May 2026 explainer describes the same mechanism from the field: the built-in protection “conflicts with the external GFCI breaker required for outlets,” and the two “can react to minor, harmless electrical leakage by ‘double-tripping.’”
Hardwiring removes the receptacle, and with it the receptacle rule. “Unlike cord-and-plug-connected EVSE, hardwired chargers are not subject to NEC 625.54 GFCI receptacle requirements,” Qmerit writes, with EVSE meaning electric vehicle supply equipment, the code’s name for a charger. Tesla does not offer the choice on its wall units at all: “Hardwire branch circuits to disconnects or circuit breakers. Do NOT install cord-and-plug type connections.” ChargePoint allows both, but only “circuits rated 40 or 50A” for the plug-in version, with the plug-in models limited to “up to 40A of power (30 miles of range per hour).” Emporia’s Classic is the same shape: “Up to 48 amps (hardwired) or 40 amps (NEMA 14-50 outlet).”
The case for the outlet is real, and it is worth stating fairly. A plug-in charger moves with you when you sell the house, a renter can take it along, and Tesla itself sells a $300 Mobile Connector alongside the Wall Connector in its shop. If you go that way, the code-compliant version is a GFCI breaker on that circuit, a charger whose manual does not forbid one, and an outlet rated for the duty, installed under a permit. If you want the full 48 amps, the fewest trips, and the makers’ blessing, hardwire it. The charging hub covers the related dryer-outlet question, which has its own trade-offs.
Can a 100-amp panel handle an EV charger?
Often, yes. The traditional answer is a load calculation: an electrician adds up the house’s nameplate loads, and if a 48-amp continuous charger pushes the total past what a 100-amp service can carry, you pay for a 200-amp upgrade. The 2023 NEC spells out a second path in 625.42(A): “Where an EMS in accordance with 750.30 provides load management of EVSE, the maximum equipment load on a service and feeder shall be the maximum load permitted by the EMS.” An EMS is an energy management system, a meter and a controller that throttle the charger when the rest of the house is busy. Under that rule the charger counts as whatever the controller caps it at, not its nameplate.
The makers built this into the boxes. Tesla’s manual: “Wall Connector incorporates automatic load management, which allows the max output to be customized to an existing power supply. If the electrical supply is unable to support the 60 amp configuration, select a lower amperage configuration.” Its Dynamic Power Management option goes further with a panel meter: “A power meter is installed to monitor live current in the panel; when panel loads are reduced, Wall Connector is able to increase charging current up to a limit set by the installer.” The commissioning page sets that limit at 80 percent: the Max Conductor Limit “should be 80% of the electrical panel’s rated limit,” which on a 100-amp panel is 80 amps. Emporia sells the same idea as PowerSmart, which “dynamically adjusts your charging speed to make sure your electrical panel never gets overloaded,” standard on its $599 Pro and available on the Classic “for an extra cost.”
The money question is simple. Load management costs a meter and some commissioning time. A panel upgrade costs $1,500 to $3,000 in Qmerit’s range, $1,500 to $5,000 and up in Treehouse’s, plus the utility’s own service work if the wire from the street is too small. If an electrician quotes an upgrade, ask two questions before signing: what did the load calculation show, and does the quote change with a load-managed charger set to 24 or 32 amps. A car that charges at 24 amps overnight still adds about 18 miles an hour, by ChargePoint’s estimate, which is about 144 miles over an eight-hour night.
What the electrician’s quote is made of
Strip the brand names away and a Level 2 quote is five things.
- The run. Distance from panel to parking spot, through conduit or drywall, in the 6 AWG copper that a full-output circuit calls for. This is the line that varies most between houses, and the reason an attached garage next to the panel lands near the bottom of the range while a detached garage lands near the top.
- The breaker and materials. Qmerit puts “Materials (Conduit, Wire, Breaker)” at $200 to $500. Tesla’s manual asks for a “standard double pole 60 amp circuit breaker” for full output and notes that “External disconnect switches are neither required nor recommended.”
- The permit and inspection. Qmerit’s range is $50 to $800 with an average near $310; Treehouse says $100 to $200. ChargePoint’s guide tells installers to “pull a permit for completing the electrical work as required.” A quote with no permit line is a quote for unpermitted work, which can surface at resale and in an insurance claim.
- Labor. $500 to $1,200 for labor and permitting at Qmerit, $700 to $1,500 for labor and materials at Treehouse.
- The code edition your inspector enforces. The NEC is adopted state by state, on different schedules. Washington’s Department of Labor & Industries “has adopted the 2023 edition of the National Electrical Code,” effective “April 1, 2024, replacing the 2020 standards,” and its own site says “The 2026 NEC will replace the current 2023 NEC edition on Dec. 31, 2026,” a date it ties to rules that are still proposed. Whether the load-management path in 625.42(A) is available to you depends on whether your state has reached the 2023 code, so ask.
Tesla points buyers to “one of the 1,000+ Tesla Certified Installers” and says flatly that the “Wall Connector must be installed by a qualified electrician.” The US Fire Administration says the same for every brand: use “a new, dedicated circuit for your EV charging device,” warns that “Older home wiring may not be suitable for use with EV supply equipment,” and says to choose equipment “certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.”

How much does it cost to install a Tesla Wall Connector?
The unit is $535, or $600 for the Universal version with a built-in J1772 adapter for non-Tesla cars, and Tesla’s shop currently says “Tesla ownership is required while supplies are limited.” Both prices are new: an archived copy of the same page listed the Wall Connector at $420 in August 2025, and the Universal at $570 as recently as June 12, 2026. ChargePoint’s guide says “Using a GFCI breaker in the panel can cause nuisance tripping” and recommends hardwiring where the code requires a GFCI on the outlet. A breaker that trips on a hardwired circuit is a different problem and needs an electrician.
Can a dryer outlet be used instead?
It is a live debate with real trade-offs on both sides; the charging hub’s dryer-outlet section lays them out. The short version is that a dedicated circuit removes the question.
Is the Level 1 cord that came with the car enough?
For a short commute and a car parked all night, sometimes. It costs nothing to install, and the US Fire Administration’s rule for it is “Never use a multiplug adapter or extension cord.” What Level 2 buys is leaving every morning full and preconditioning the battery in winter without draining it; the charging hub has the speed table for each level.
What to do before you call an electrician
Find out what your car can take, because a 40-amp circuit covers a Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive or a Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive or All-Wheel Drive completely. Read your utility’s rebate page before you pick a charger, since the approved list and the 60-day clock decide the rebate, not the charger’s spec sheet. Then get three quotes that each show the run, the breaker, the permit and the labor as separate lines, and if one of them includes a panel upgrade, ask for the load calculation and a price for a load-managed charger instead. The federal credit is gone; the $1,500 to $5,000 you can still save is on the panel.
