iPhone Duo Repair Cost: Is AppleCare+ Worth It?

Out of warranty, Apple charges $999 to fix the iPhone Duo's folding inner screen and $379 for the outer one. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss costs $199.99 a year and cuts those fees to $99 and $29, so one inner-screen repair is worth four and a half years of the plan. Every repair price, the break-even, AppleCare One, and how Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile compare.

An opened folding phone with its inner screen shattered down the fold lies on a repair bench next to a tray of gold bars where the tools should be

If you crack the iPhone Duo’s folding inner screen without coverage, Apple’s own estimate for the fix is $999, and the outer screen is $379. The phone starts at $1,999, so one bad fold costs half the starting price. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for the Duo costs $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year, and it drops the inner-screen fee to $99 and the outer-screen fee to $29.

Put those together and the answer is short. One inner-screen repair saves $900, which pays for four and a half years of AppleCare+ billed yearly. If you carry the Duo every day, AppleCare+ is worth it. Of the carrier plans, T-Mobile’s costs more than AppleCare+ over a year in almost every case; Verizon’s runs from about $8 cheaper to $28 dearer a year before taxes and surcharges, with no claim or one $99 damage claim, depending on the Duo’s price tier, and swings wider on a theft; the comparison below shows where each one wins. All prices here are US prices, read from Apple’s, the carriers’ and their claims partners’ pages on October 22, 2026; the carrier terms shown are the ones for customers outside New York, which T-Mobile and AT&T say their documents don’t cover.

iPhone Duo repair cost without AppleCare+

These are Apple’s estimates for out-of-warranty repairs, next to the iPhone 18 Pro Max for scale. Apple notes that it inspects the phone to set the final fee, that tax and a shipping fee may be added, and that Apple Authorized Service Providers “can set their own service fees.”

RepairiPhone DuoiPhone 18 Pro Max
Inner (folding) display$999no inner display
Outer display (on the Pro Max: the screen)$379$379
Outer display and back glass$509$469
Back glass$199$159
Rear camera$229$249
Battery service$229$129
Cover layer$49no cover layer
Other damage$1,499$899

The outer screen costs the same as a Pro Max screen. The inner display is $999, and Apple’s catch-all “Other damage” line is $1,499 against $899 on the Pro Max. Battery service is $229, $100 more than the Pro Max’s. Separately, Apple describes the Duo as having “a dual-battery architecture.”

Apple’s one-year limited warranty is “hardware coverage”; Apple describes AppleCare as the plan that adds “accidental damage protection” on top of it.

What AppleCare+ costs for the iPhone Duo

The Duo is the most expensive iPhone to cover. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year for the Duo, against $14.99 or $149.99 for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Apple’s store offers the Duo plan monthly or yearly, renewing “until cancelled.”

With the plan, most repairs and replacements still carry a fee; battery service below 80 percent capacity is $0.

ClaimFee with AppleCare+Without coverageYou save
Inner display$99$999$900
Outer display$29$379$350
Back glass$29$199$170
Cover layer only$19$49$30
Rear camera (other accidental damage fee)$99$229$130
Other accidental damage (liquid included with AppleCare+)$99$1,499 (“Other damage” estimate)$1,400
Battery below 80% of original capacity$0$229$229
Theft or loss$149a new phone, from $1,999about $1,850

Apple’s fee page lists “$29 for outer display and back glass damage” as one line, and it has no camera line, so the table uses its $99 “other accidental damage” fee for the rear camera. Apple’s estimator has no separate liquid-damage line, so the $1,499 is its “Other damage” figure, not a liquid price. Under AppleCare, Apple says liquid damage “is covered as part of accidental damage protection” at the $99 fee. The plan covers “Unlimited repairs for accidents like drops and spills” and theft or loss “for up to 2 claims every 12 months.” The battery is replaced at no extra charge once it “holds less than 80 percent of the original capacity.”

Is AppleCare+ worth it for the iPhone Duo?

Yes, unless the Duo will spend its life in a drawer. The yearly plan costs $199.99, so the question is whether one year is likely to bring at least one repair that saves more than that.

If this happens in year onePaying Apple without coverageYearly AppleCare+ plus the feeWhich is cheaper
Nothing breaks$0$199.99no plan, by $199.99
Cover layer only$49$218.99no plan, by $169.99
Back glass$199$228.99no plan, by $29.99
Rear camera$229$298.99no plan, by $69.99
Outer display$379$228.99AppleCare+, by $150.01
Inner display$999$298.99AppleCare+, by $700.01
Other damage$1,499$298.99AppleCare+, by $1,200.01
Lost or stolenfrom $1,999$348.99AppleCare+, by about $1,650

The plan pays for itself in any year with one outer-screen, inner-screen, other-damage or theft claim. Billed monthly it costs $239.88 a year, $39.89 more, which still leaves every row from the outer display down in the plan’s favor.

Another way to read it: the yearly plan beats paying per repair if your chance of breaking the inner screen in a given year is higher than about 22 percent, or one in four and a half ($199.99 against the $900 the plan saves on that repair). That ignores every other claim the plan would cover, so the real bar is lower.

AppleCare+ or AppleCare One?

AppleCare One Individual, sold in the US, the UK, Australia, France and Germany, also costs $19.99 a month, and Apple’s Duo order page offers it as a way to cover “multiple products, including this iPhone.” It covers “up to 3 products, including those you already own,” allows theft and loss claims on covered iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches “up to 3 total claims every 12 months,” and adds more products for $5.99 a month each. Apple lists the same fees for AppleCare One as for AppleCare+.

  • The Duo is the only device you would cover: take AppleCare+ billed yearly. At $199.99 it is $39.89 a year less than AppleCare One’s $239.88.
  • You would also cover two more devices: AppleCare One covers the Duo plus two of them for the same $19.99 a month that AppleCare+ charges for the Duo alone, billed monthly.
  • Just one more device: compare yearly prices first. AppleCare One costs $239.88 a year, $39.89 more than the Duo’s yearly plan, so it wins only if the other device’s own yearly AppleCare+ costs more than that: an iPad (from $54.99) or an Apple Watch Series 12 ($49.99) does, an Apple Watch SE 3 ($29.99) does not, and the cheapest Mac plan (from $39.99) is a wash. AppleCare One also shares its three theft and loss claims across all covered devices, where AppleCare+ gives each device two.

Devices you already own can join AppleCare One if they are “in good condition” and “four years old or newer,” and Apple may require “a diagnostic check and/or inspection.” The device also has to be associated with your Apple Account. If a device already has AppleCare+, moving it into AppleCare One cancels the old plan and refunds the unused part, “as an Apple Gift Card” if you paid up front.

AppleCare+ or your carrier’s insurance?

Each carrier sells its own plan. Against AppleCare+, T-Mobile’s plan costs more over a year in almost every case. Verizon’s and AT&T’s can cost a little less per month; their fees match Apple’s on some claims, beat them on others, cost more on others, and for the Duo depend on a tier or deductible their pages don’t give.

Plan (Duo, read Oct 22, 2026)Per monthDamage claimTheft or loss
AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss$19.99, or $199.99 a year$99 inner screen, $29 outer screen or back glass$149, 2 claims per 12 months
T-Mobile Protection 360, Duo bought from T-Mobile (Tier 6)$26 plus tax$179; $0 screen or back-glass repair for “eligible smartphones” at Assurant-authorized centers$449, up to 5 claims per rolling 12 months
T-Mobile Protection 360, Duo bought elsewhere (BYOD)$19 plus tax (BYOD tier)$89; same $0 repair terms$224
Verizon Mobile Protect, one device$19 or $16 plus taxes and surcharges, “depending on device”$99 (lower if the device’s theft deductible is under $99); $0 cracked screen and back glass for “select smartphones”$19 to $279 by device
AT&T Protect Advantage, one device$16, $19 or $25 by model$0 screen and back-glass repairs (“eligible devices” on AT&T’s support page); replacement deductible by devicedeductible by device

BYOD, short for bring your own device, is T-Mobile’s term for a phone that is not T-Mobile-branded, such as a Duo bought unlocked and moved to T-Mobile; T-Mobile’s pages don’t say how it treats a Duo bought from Apple with T-Mobile selected at checkout. T-Mobile’s lookup says phones not branded by T-Mobile “are automatically assigned to the BYOD Tier 5,” which its brochure prices at $19 a month (the lookup’s BYOD result still labels the Duo “Tier 6” but shows the BYOD fees), and T-Mobile says AppleCare Services “may not be included” for them. Verizon’s pages don’t say which of its two prices the Duo gets, and AT&T’s support page, last updated October 20, 2025, doesn’t say which of its three applies. Both send you to a per-device deductible lookup (Verizon says “Deductibles vary by device”), so check the Duo there before you compare.

The next table adds a year of fees to one claim, for each plan where the Duo’s figures are published and, for Verizon, at both of its prices. Verizon’s rows are before taxes and surcharges, and its $99 damage fee drops if the Duo’s theft deductible is under $99.

First year, one claimInner screenOuter screenLost or stolen
AppleCare+, yearly$298.99$228.99$348.99
T-Mobile, bought from T-Mobile$491 plus tax$312 plus tax with a $0 repair, $491 plus tax without$761 plus tax
T-Mobile, BYOD$317 plus tax$228 plus tax with a $0 repair, $317 plus tax without$452 plus tax
Verizon at $19 a month, plus taxes and surcharges$327$228 with a $0 repair, $327 without$247 to $507
Verizon at $16 a month, plus taxes and surcharges$291$192 with a $0 repair, $291 without$211 to $471

A Duo bought from T-Mobile loses every column, and its lookup adds that the $179 fee “applies to devices eligible for AppleCare Services”: a screen fixed by Apple through that route costs $179, and the $0 repair applies only at Assurant-authorized centers. A BYOD Duo on T-Mobile roughly ties AppleCare+ only on an outer screen fixed for $0 ($228 plus tax against $228.99), and loses the rest. Verizon is close. At $16 a month it is roughly even on an inner-screen claim ($7.99 less before taxes and surcharges) and ahead on a $0 repair; at $19 it loses the inner-screen claim, roughly ties on a $0 repair, and on a theft wins only if the Duo’s deductible is $109 or less.

The $0 repairs come with conditions. T-Mobile’s apply “when and where service is provided through Assurant-authorized repair centers,” and otherwise the claim becomes a replacement with the full damage fee. Verizon limits its $0 repairs to “select smartphones,” and AT&T to “eligible devices.” If both the screen and the back glass are damaged, Asurion and AT&T say the phone has to qualify for both repairs, or it is replaced at the full deductible. Asurion, which runs Verizon’s claims, says its repairs “may contain original or non-original manufacturer parts, and may void the manufacturer warranty.” On a Duo still under Apple’s one-year warranty, that matters. None of the carrier pages read for this guide says whether a folding inner screen qualifies for a $0 repair.

A replacement phone may also not be new. Asurion says claims “may be fulfilled with new or refurbished devices.” AT&T’s November 2026 document for its multi-device plans says replacements may be “refurbished or remanufactured.” T-Mobile’s plan can include Apple’s own service through AppleCare Services on eligible devices, but its brochure limits that to the first 24 months after you enroll, and only while your coverage stays uninterrupted. Apple describes its own plan’s repairs as “Apple-certified.”

So skip T-Mobile’s plan for a Duo. Verizon’s is a close call on price: it can come out ahead if the Duo gets its $16 price and you get a $0 repair, or if the Duo’s theft deductible is low, and in exchange the repair may not be Apple’s. For most Duo owners, AppleCare+ from Apple, billed yearly, is the plan to buy.

If you are on an AT&T multi-device plan, AT&T is raising it from $50 to $55 a month on November 17, 2026; its replacement deductibles for connected devices run from $25 to $400 by tier.

What is the iPhone Duo’s cover layer?

It is a layer over the folding display that Apple says can be replaced on its own, according to MacRumors’ October 1 report. Replacing it costs $49 without coverage and $19 with AppleCare+. Apple’s estimator now lists that $49, which MacRumors’ report said had not yet been disclosed. It is the cheapest Duo repair on either list, and, with back glass and the rear camera, one of three repairs where a year of the plan plus its fee costs more than paying Apple once.

Don’t treat it like a screen protector. Engadget’s October 21 review warns that the layer “can be removed if you pick at it too much,” and that “unlike with its Android rivals, there’s no warning during setup that this film should not be peeled off by anyone aside from Apple-certified technicians.”

When can you add AppleCare+ to an iPhone Duo?

If you buy the Duo from Apple, you can add an AppleCare plan at checkout, or “for 60 days after a new Apple purchase” through the Settings app. Bought it from a carrier? Apple’s Settings instructions, which don’t limit the offer to Apple purchases, say “You can buy an AppleCare plan within 60 days of your iPhone purchase” if the device is eligible, under Settings, General, About. The carriers set their own windows: Verizon within 30 days of activation (Asurion’s page also shows a Verizon open-enrollment period ending November 1), AT&T within 30 days of activation or an upgrade, and T-Mobile after purchase if the phone passes “a visual mechanical inspection in a T-Mobile store.” If you start on a carrier plan that includes AppleCare Services and later want AppleCare One, Apple says you first “need to contact your AppleCare Services vendor.”

Which coverage to get for an iPhone Duo

  • Only the Duo to cover: AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, billed yearly at $199.99. One inner-screen claim at $99 instead of $999 covers four and a half years of it.
  • The Duo plus two more Apple devices: AppleCare One Individual at $19.99 a month covers up to three products; with just one more, compare yearly AppleCare+ prices first.
  • Offered a carrier plan: skip T-Mobile’s, which costs more over a year than AppleCare+ in almost every case. Verizon’s runs from about $8 cheaper to $28 dearer a year before taxes and surcharges with one $99 claim or none (it prices Tier 1 smartphones at $19 and Tier 2 at $16), and wider on a theft; look up the Duo’s tier and deductible before you choose it.
  • No coverage at all: keep $999 in mind for the inner screen and $1,499 for anything Apple files under “Other damage.”
