If your iPhone Duo’s inner screen cracks or shows a line and you didn’t drop or damage it, contact AppleCare. Apple told 9to5Mac it is “aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units” and that owners who “experience issues with their iPhone Duo display” should “contact AppleCare for a replacement.” According to 9to5Mac, you don’t need AppleCare+ for this replacement, and if you bought the phone from a carrier, you go to AppleCare, not the carrier.
If Apple decides the damage was accidental, the price changes completely. In the US, Apple’s estimate for inner display damage without coverage is $999, and $99 with AppleCare+. The phone starts at $1,999 in the US.
The prices, warranty and return rules on this page are Apple’s US terms. The Duo reaches 28 other countries and regions on October 30, so if you’re outside the US, check your local Apple prices, return terms and consumer-law rights.
What you’ll pay, by what happened to the screen
Apple’s US estimates, read from its repair page on October 27, 2026. Apple says it inspects the phone “to determine the final service fee,” tax or a shipping fee may be added, and Apple Authorized Service Providers “can set their own service fees” outside AppleCare.
| What happened | Without AppleCare+ | With AppleCare+ |
|---|---|---|
| Inner screen cracked or lined along the fold, not from a drop or impact (matches reports of the issue Apple acknowledged) | Replacement through AppleCare; AppleCare+ not needed, per 9to5Mac | Same |
| Inner screen damaged by a drop, impact or other accident | $999 | $99 |
| Only the inner screen’s cover layer is scratched or worn | $49 | $19 |
| Outer screen cracked | $379 | $29 |
| Other accidental damage | $1,499 | $99 |
Neither Apple’s statement nor the reports on it mention a fee for the first row. Without AppleCare+, the difference between the first two rows can be as much as $999; with it, $99.
What Apple has said about the cracked iPhone Duo screens
Apple gave the same statement to 9to5Mac and MacRumors on October 26, 2026. Its two working sentences: “We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.”
MacRumors, citing Apple, reports three more points: most owners won’t see the problem, it isn’t a defect that develops over time, and on affected units the crack seems to appear shortly after purchase. 9to5Mac puts it as the problem appearing “to surface relatively quickly.” Neither gives a number of days.
What Apple did not say matters too. It gave no cause, no count beyond “a small number,” and, according to MacRumors, did not say whether a fix is planned. The statement offers replacements and does not mention a recall. iFixit describes Apple as offering replacement units “for now.” MacRumors also says some of the photos of alleged cracks going around are AI-generated, which makes the real number harder to judge.
What the crack looks like
Many owners describe a similar sequence. iFixit, the repair site, says people report “opening or closing their device, hearing a noise, and then seeing a small line extending down the fold and a bright line extending across the display.” MacRumors reports a “stuck feeling and sometimes a popping noise” just before the damage, and says many affected phones cracked in the same place, on the lower half of the inner screen along the hinge.
It can happen fast. iFixit cites one owner whose screen failed within six hours of buying the phone and another whose failed before setup was finished.
You may see the lines and nothing else. iFixit says some affected owners “can’t even see any other problems” with the naked eye, which it calls not too surprising: “A localized fault in the tiny electrical connections can affect an entire row or column of pixels.” A bright line along or across the inner screen belongs in the same AppleCare conversation as a visible crack.
What might be causing it
Nobody has confirmed a cause. iFixit built a 3D model of the hinge from teardown footage, patents and CT scans and found that “the breaks cluster near the transition from the gap for the crossing flex cable to the central hinge support.” In its simulation, “the center support bar fails to drop far enough,” so the folding screen comes down onto it and creates a stress hotspot near where the breaks show up. iFixit offers that as “one possible answer,” not a finding.
What to do if your iPhone Duo’s inner screen cracks
- Contact AppleCare, not your carrier. That is Apple’s instruction, and 9to5Mac says it applies even if you bought the phone through a carrier.
- Don’t assume you need AppleCare+. 9to5Mac reports that you don’t need it for this problem.
- Expect a wait for stock. Owners have gotten replacements in Apple Stores, but MacRumors says stock is limited and some are waiting.
- Don’t pick at the inner screen’s top layer. Engadget warns that the Duo’s nanotexture layer “can be removed if you pick at it too much,” and that there is no warning during setup that it should only come off at the hands of Apple-certified technicians.
- Ask about a return if you’re still inside 14 days. For US purchases from Apple online or in an Apple Store, you have 14 calendar days from the day you received the phone. A phone that arrived on launch day, October 23, has until about November 6. Apple says returned products “may require inspection,” so a refund on a cracked phone isn’t automatic; ask. Products bought through other retailers follow those retailers’ return policies.
Is a cracked iPhone Duo screen covered by warranty?
Every iPhone Duo comes with Apple’s one-year limited warranty; the US version covers “defects in materials and workmanship when used normally,” and excludes “damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, fire, liquid contact, earthquake or other external cause.”
Apple inspects the phone to determine the final service fee, which in practice means deciding which side of that line your crack falls on. A screen that failed along the fold without a drop matches the reports of the issue Apple has acknowledged. A screen that cracked after a drop is accidental damage: $999 without AppleCare+, $99 with it.
If you’re deciding whether AppleCare+ is worth adding for the accidental cases, the iPhone Duo repair cost guide has the plan’s price, the break-even and how the carrier plans compare.
Scratches in the cover layer are a different, cheaper fix
The inner screen’s outermost layer is a polymer, not glass. Apple says “a scratch-resistant coating and a nano-textured cover layer,” made from “a custom polymer,” protect the surface, with high-strength glass above and below the folding panel underneath. That layer is replaceable: Apple hardware engineering vice president Kate Bergeron told an interviewer you “can peel off that layer and get a new one.”
If the damage is only in that layer, Apple’s fee is $49 without AppleCare+ and $19 with it. According to MacRumors, Bergeron said Apple did a “significant amount of engineering work” to keep the layer in good condition, with replacement as the option if it wears down or the crease becomes more visible over time; MacRumors expects the swap to be limited to Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers.
Does the iPhone Duo inner screen need a screen protector?
It has a built-in protective cover layer, but that layer is not a protector you should remove or replace yourself. If it wears, Apple replaces it for $49, or $19 with AppleCare+. For the fold cracks, the “one possible answer” iFixit offers puts the stress inside the hinge, under the screen, which a surface protector wouldn’t address; no cause is confirmed. The outer screen is a different surface, covered by Ceramic Shield 2. The iPhone Duo screen protector guide lists outer-screen protectors made for the Duo and how to check one fits with a case.
Should you still buy an iPhone Duo?
Apple’s account, as MacRumors reports it, is that most owners won’t see the problem and that it shows up shortly after purchase rather than over time. If you buy from Apple in the US, the 14-day return window gives you some time to spot it, subject to Apple’s inspection.
Two things would change that picture: Apple naming a cause, or Apple saying a fix is coming. As of its October 26 statement, it had done neither. For how the Duo does in daily use, read the iPhone Duo review; for what Apple announced, see the iPhone Duo launch details.
Frequently asked questions
Is Apple recalling the iPhone Duo?
No recall has been announced. Apple’s October 26 statement tells affected owners to contact AppleCare for a replacement and says nothing about a recall.
Do I need AppleCare+ to get a cracked iPhone Duo replaced?
Not for the issue Apple acknowledged, according to 9to5Mac. For accidental damage, AppleCare+ lowers the US inner-screen fee from $999 to $99, among its other benefits.
Is a line on the inner screen, with no crack, the same problem?
It can be. Owners report a bright line across the display along with a line down the fold, and some see nothing else; iFixit says a localized electrical fault can take out a whole row or column of pixels. Apple’s statement covers owners who “experience issues with their iPhone Duo display,” so contact AppleCare either way.
How much is an iPhone Duo screen replacement?
In the US, out of warranty, $999 for the inner screen and $379 for the outer screen. With AppleCare+, $99 and $29.
