iPhone Duo or iPhone 18 Pro Max? What $700 More Buys

The iPhone Duo costs $700 more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max at every storage size: $1,999 against $1,299 with 256GB. The extra money buys a 7.6-inch screen that folds to about the size of a passport, with Apple Pencil support due later this year. It gives up the telephoto camera, Face ID and about four hours on Tom's Guide's battery test. Specs, same-lab battery tests, cameras, repair costs and who should buy which.

Buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max unless you specifically want a phone that opens into a small tablet. The iPhone Duo costs $700 more at every storage size: $1,999 against $1,299 with 256GB, up to $3,199 against $2,499 with 2TB. That money buys a 7.6-inch inner screen that folds shut to about the size of a passport, with a 5.4-inch screen on the outside. It also gets Apple Pencil support, which no 18 Pro model lists, though Apple says that arrives “later this year.” It gives up the Pro Max’s telephoto camera, Face ID and the Action button, and it ran out of battery about four hours sooner than the Pro Max on Tom’s Guide’s test, 13 hours 20 minutes against 17 hours 31 minutes. Both run the same A20 Pro chip, though both labs measured the Pro Max slightly faster.

iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro Max at a glance

Everything in this table is from Apple’s two U.S. spec pages and its U.S. online store as of October 23, 2026, except the two battery-test rows, which are each lab’s own result for both phones on its own test. The zoom, video playback and fast-charge rows are Apple’s own claims, and the Pro Max figures are for the eSIM-only model sold in the U.S.; Apple says eSIM-only models get “more battery life,” and PCMag notes the SIM-tray version sold elsewhere has a smaller battery.

How much more does the iPhone Duo cost than the 18 Pro Max?

The gap is $700 at all four storage sizes on Apple’s store, so a bigger drive never narrows it. PCMag’s review lists the 2TB Duo at $3,299, which would make that gap $800; Apple’s own store showed $3,199 on October 23. On Apple’s 24-month financing the base models are $83.29 a month for the Duo and $54.12 for the Pro Max. The 2TB Pro Max, at $2,499, costs more than a base Duo.

Covering the Duo costs more too. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year for the Duo, against $14.99 or $149.99 for the Pro Max. Over two years of the yearly plan, that adds $100 to the gap.

Which has better battery life, the iPhone Duo or the 18 Pro Max?

The Pro Max, on every test that ran both phones. Apple’s own claims already point that way: up to 45 hours of video playback on the Pro Max, against up to 31 hours for the Duo on its inner screen and up to 44 hours on its outer one. Apple describes the Duo’s split this way: “up to 24 hours of usage per charge when both displays are used equally.”

Two labs tested both phones the same way, and their results should not be mixed with each other:

  • Tom’s Guide browses the web over 5G at 150 nits until the phone dies, and says it had to redesign the test “so that it filled the whole screen on the iPhone Duo.” The Duo lasted 13 hours 20 minutes on its inner screen, and the review adds that “the iPhone 18 Pro Max lasted 17.5 hours under the same conditions,” 17:31 in its table. Tom’s Guide’s earlier Pro Max article, published before the redesign, reported 18 hours 27 minutes; the 17:31 is the figure from the same run as the Duo, so it is the one to compare.
  • PCMag streams a YouTube video over Wi-Fi at full brightness. The Duo, on its inner screen, ran for 18 hours 15 minutes; the Pro Max lasted 34 hours 31 minutes.

So the gap is about four hours on a browsing test and about 16 hours on a video loop. PCMag still lists “Class-leading battery life” among the Duo’s pros; the phones it compares it with in that test are other foldables. In everyday use, after most of a day of mixed use including photos, gaming, music and Slack, the Tom’s Guide reviewer’s phone “was down to 40% at the end of my day.”

Charging is close. Apple quotes 50 percent in around 20 minutes for the Duo with a 60W-or-higher adapter, and around 15 minutes for the Pro Max with a 60W-or-higher adapter that has Adjustable Voltage Supply. Neither box includes an adapter, only a USB-C cable. Both charge at up to 25W on MagSafe and Qi2.

Is the iPhone Duo camera as good as the 18 Pro Max?

Not quite, and the gap widens past 8x zoom. Both have a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultra wide, but only the Pro Max has a telephoto: a 48MP lens at 100 mm, which Apple calls 4x, with an 8x optical-quality crop. The Duo’s longest optical-quality setting is a 2x crop of its main sensor, and digital zoom stops at 10x, against 40x on the Pro Max.

The reviewers saw the difference. Tom’s Guide shot the same scenes on both at 2x, 4x, 8x and 10x and found “The Duo holds its own up until 8x and then things start to get fuzzy”; at 10x, a hot dog stand’s sign “is much sharper through the iPhone 18 Pro Max at 10x zoom, while the iPhone Duo’s image looks like a blurry water color.” PCMag says the Duo “takes superb photos in most scenes,” but that on the main camera “The 18 Pro Max and its variable aperture outperform the Duo here,” and that its digital zoom results “are not as clean as the optical zoom you get on the iPhone 18 Pros.”

Two more gaps matter if you film seriously. The Pro Max’s main camera has a variable aperture with four settings, from f/1.48 to f/4.0, while the Duo’s is fixed at f/1.6. And Apple lists ProRes and ProRes RAW video recording on the Pro Max, formats that do not appear on the Duo’s spec page. The front cameras differ as well: an 18MP Center Stage camera on the Pro Max, a 12MP one on the Duo’s outer screen and an under-display FaceTime camera inside.

Is the iPhone Duo bigger or heavier than the 18 Pro Max?

Heavier by 5 grams, and shorter. The Duo weighs 254 grams and the Pro Max 249. Closed, the Duo is 117.8 mm tall, 84.1 mm wide and 11.3 mm thick; the Pro Max is 163.4 mm tall, 78.0 mm wide and 8.75 mm thick. Open, the Duo is 164.6 mm wide and 5.2 mm thick.

That shape changes how each one carries. PCMag says the Duo comes across “as a little stubby when compared with the iPhone 18 Pro Max,” but that it slips into a pocket more easily than the Pro Max and “fits much better than a mega-sized slab phone” in a back pocket. Closed, Apple says the Duo is “similar in size to a passport,” and that its outer screen “delivers 90 percent of the screen area” of the smaller 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro. PCMag measures it against the Pro Max instead, calling the outer screen “about 1.5 inches shorter (top to bottom) than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen,” so you see less of each email or web page.

Touch ID, buttons and the apps you use

The Duo unlocks with Touch ID in the side button; the Pro Max uses Face ID. The two reviews disagree on how well it works. PCMag found the Duo’s sensor “prone to misreads, requiring repeated attempts to successfully unlock,” and lists “Touch ID feels like a step back” among its cons. Tom’s Guide says “The Touch ID sensor works perfectly fine,” but that it “introduces lag versus Face ID when unlocking your phone.” Apple’s spec page for the Pro Max lists an Action button; the Duo’s lists none, and PCMag’s reviewer writes, “I’d much rather Apple carry over the user-programmable Action Button, but the Duo doesn’t have one.”

The inner screen is only as good as the app on it. Tom’s Guide says that “while fully updated apps for the Duo look great, non-optimized apps do not,” and that “many third-party apps aren’t optimized for this form factor (yet).” Before you pay $700 for the bigger screen, check whether the apps you use most have been updated for it.

What does each one cost to repair?

The outer screen on the Duo costs the same to replace as the Pro Max’s screen, $379. Most other lines on Apple’s out-of-warranty estimate, as read on October 22, 2026, cost more on the Duo; the rear camera is $20 cheaper:

Repair (Apple’s estimate, no coverage)iPhone DuoiPhone 18 Pro Max
Inner (folding) display$999no inner display
Outer display (on the Pro Max: the screen)$379$379
Back glass$199$159
Rear camera$229$249
Battery service$229$129
Other damage$1,499$899

The full breakdown, AppleCare+ fees and carrier plans are on the iPhone Duo repair cost page.

One more thing if you are on AT&T

Apple confirmed on October 2 that “a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network” could lose service; phones that have already lost it need a hardware replacement, and iOS 27.0.1 plus a carrier settings update “are meant to help prevent this issue from occurring.” Apple’s statement names only the Pro Max, and MacRumors writes that “No other iPhone models or carriers are known to be impacted.” MacRumors also reports that U.S. Pro Max models use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 modem while Pro Max models sold in other countries use Apple’s C2, the modem Apple’s Duo spec page lists; MacRumors adds that “It is unclear if this modem difference is a factor in this AT&T issue.” What to do if you already own an affected Pro Max is on the AT&T service fault page.

Which should you buy?

  • Buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you zoom in on things (concerts, kids’ sports, wildlife), if battery life matters more than screen size, or if you want Face ID. It is the longer-lasting phone on both labs’ tests and $700 cheaper at any storage size. On AT&T, read the section above first; 9to5Mac reports that the smaller 18 Pro “is unaffected by these AT&T connectivity issues.”
  • Buy the iPhone Duo if you would otherwise carry a small tablet for reading, video or two apps side by side, or you want to write on your phone with an Apple Pencil once Apple’s support arrives later this year. PCMag, which tested a Pencil on its review unit, found “the textured inner screen feels much better” than the outer one for writing. Tom’s Guide calls it “the best designed foldable phone I’ve ever tested,” and PCMag says it delivers “the best hardware, performance, and battery life of any foldable phone on the market.” Tom’s Guide’s own summary of the trade-off is “the lack of a telephoto zoom is a bummer for a $2,000 phone.”
  • Want a smaller, cheaper Pro instead? The iPhone 18 Pro has the same chip and camera system as the Pro Max for $1,199, with a 6.3-inch screen. Every current model is compared in Which iPhone should you buy?.

If you order a Duo, expect a wait. Pre-orders opened October 16 and the phone went on sale in the U.S. and other launch countries October 23, with 28 more countries and regions from October 30, and Tom’s Guide says it “is backordered for many until December or January.”

Frequently asked questions

Does the iPhone Duo have MagSafe?

Yes. Apple lists MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging at up to 25W on the Duo, the same figure as the 18 Pro Max, plus a magnet array and alignment magnet.

Is the iPhone Duo faster than the iPhone 18 Pro Max?

No, though it is close. Apple lists the same A20 Pro chip in both, with a 6-core CPU and a 7-core GPU. On PCMag’s Geekbench run the Duo scored 4,009 single-core and 11,134 multi-core against 4,719 and 12,804 for the Pro Max. Tom’s Guide, on its own tests, calls the Duo “just about as fast as the iPhone 18 Pro Max,” with the Pro Max ahead on every row of its table.

Is the iPhone Duo as water-resistant as the 18 Pro Max?

Yes. Apple calls both “Splash, Water, and Dust Resistant” and rates both IP68 (an international dust and water rating), to a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes.

Do both have a SIM card slot?

Not the Duo, which Apple describes as “an eSIM-only design worldwide” (an eSIM is a digital SIM built into the phone). The Pro Max is eSIM-only in the U.S., Canada, Japan, Mexico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and six Gulf countries; elsewhere it keeps a physical SIM tray.
