Is an Oura Ring Worth It? Real Cost With the Membership

Yes, if sleep and recovery are why you want it and you will pay the membership. The Oura Ring 5 costs $399 in silver or black at Oura, and the Oura Membership is $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year before tax, so three years on the annual plan comes to $608.97. Without the membership the app shows only your three daily scores, the ring's battery, basic settings and Explore content. If you never want a subscription, the RingConn Gen 3 is $349 with no plan required.

Yes, an Oura Ring is worth it if sleep and recovery are the reason you want one and you will keep paying for the membership. Buy the Oura Ring 5 in silver or black: Oura sells both for $399, and its other four finishes cost $499.

The real cost is the Oura Membership, at $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US before tax, after one free month for new members. Without it, the app shows only your three daily scores (Readiness, Activity and Sleep), the ring’s battery, basic profile and settings, and Oura’s Explore content. Three years of a silver or black Ring 5 with the annual plan comes to $608.97.

If you never want a subscription, buy the RingConn Gen 3 instead. RingConn sells it for $349 ($369 in the brushed finishes) and lists “No Subscription Required” among its features. Every price on this page is the maker’s own, checked on November 1, 2026, and some Ring 4 finishes showed sale prices that day, so check again the week you buy.

The Oura totals add three annual payments of $69.99 ($209.97) to the ring’s price. The free first month starts when you pair the ring, so three years on the monthly plan is 35 payments of $5.99, or $209.65, almost the same. Oura’s own price list, published on its blog on October 13, 2026, already showed the Ring 4 in Stealth at $349 and the Ring 4 Ceramic at $399.

Oura’s own wording is that without a membership “your Oura Ring and Oura App will still function, but the insights, personal health data, and benefits you receive will be much more limited.” In practice, the membership is part of the price. If you stop paying and don’t delete your account, Oura keeps your data, and you can still export it as a CSV file.

The membership belongs to your Oura account, not the ring, so it moves to a new ring when you upgrade. There is no lifetime membership for sale; some members who bought a Gen3 ring have one from a past promotion.

Is Oura’s sleep tracking accurate?

The evidence here is one sleep-lab study, with caveats you should know. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital compared an Oura Ring (Gen3), an Apple Watch Series 8 and a Fitbit Sense 2 against polysomnography, the clinical sleep-lab test, in a study that enrolled 35 participants. They reported that “the Oura ring was not different from PSG in terms of wake, light sleep, deep sleep, or REM sleep estimation,” while the Fitbit and Apple Watch each misjudged some sleep stages.

Two caveats. The authors write that their findings “are not generalizable to other devices or subsequent models of the tested devices,” and two Oura generations have shipped since the Gen3. The paper also states that the research “was funded by Oura Ring Inc.” Treat it as good evidence for Oura’s approach, not a test of the Ring 5.

Ring 5 or Ring 4?

Buy the Ring 5 unless the price gap or your ring size points you to the Ring 4.

Oura calls the Ring 5 “Ultra-thin and 40% smaller than Oura Ring 4.” The Ring 4 still sells at Oura from $349, so saving $50 is reasonable if the thinner ring is not the point. Size can decide it for you: the Ring 5 comes in sizes 6 to 13, while the Ring 4 runs from 4 to 15. One membership covers either ring, and it carries over if you upgrade later.

In the Ring 5 box you get the ring, a size-specific charger and a USB-C cable; Oura’s charging case, which it says gives “A full day of battery life in 10 minutes,” is sold separately. A one-year protection plan is included, and Oura’s store sells upgrades to two years for $45 or three years for $60. Oura’s limited warranty lists “Consumable parts, including batteries” among what it does not cover.

Each Oura listing on Amazon is one size of one finish, so pick your size on the listing before you add it to your cart. Amazon.com was the seller on each of these Oura listings on November 1. Oura’s warranty applies to products bought from its online store or authorized retailers, so check who the seller is before you buy anywhere else.

Buying an Oura Ring as a gift

Sizing is the trap. Oura recommends its sizing kit before you choose, and notes that its sizes “differ slightly from standard ring sizes” and come in no half sizes. Oura suggests wearing the plastic sizer for at least 24 hours, including while sleeping, and picking the smaller size if you are between two. The Ring 5 fits differently from the Ring 4, so an old Oura size may not carry over; re-check with the Ring 5 kit.

That makes a surprise gift hard. Two ways around it:

  • Give the sizing kit first, then the ring. Oura’s store offers a free sizing kit, and the Oura Ring 5 sizing kit is also sold on Amazon.
  • Buy from Oura’s own store for its return window. Oura gives you 30 days from the day the ring arrives to return or exchange it, so a ring bought early for a December gift can be out of the window by the time it is opened. Exchanges are for a different size of the same ring, you get one return or exchange per item, everything in the box has to go back, and original shipping is not refunded. On Amazon, the seller’s own return policy applies, so check it before you buy.

The person you give it to pays for the membership. When they pair the ring, Oura asks them for payment details, and a new member is billed after the free month. If you want to cover that too, Oura lets you add a prepaid annual membership to a new ring bought on its online store; the recipient still enters a card at setup, gets the free month plus the prepaid year, and is billed after that unless they cancel. One more note for returns: returning the ring does not cancel the membership, so it has to be cancelled separately.

Rings with no required subscription: RingConn and Ultrahuman

RingConn Gen 3 is the pick if the membership is the deal-breaker. RingConn lists it at $349 in Future Silver, Royal Gold and Matte Black, and $369 in Brushed Silver and Brushed Rose Gold. RingConn’s page lists “No Subscription Required,” up to 14 days of battery and a wireless charging case. Its sizes also differ from standard rings and from older RingConn rings, so use RingConn’s free sizing kit. It works with iPhones on iOS 17.0 or later and Android phones on Android 10.0 or later.

Ultrahuman Ring PRO costs $479 with its charging case, and Ultrahuman says “there are no recurring subscription fees for accessing your data.” It also sells an optional Ultrahuman Max plan that adds premium features and UltrahumanX coverage, and it offers sizes 5 to 14 with a free sizing kit. Know the legal background before you buy. A 2025 US International Trade Commission ruling led to an import ban on Ultrahuman’s earlier Ring Air, and the redesigned Ring PRO went back on US sale after a favorable US Customs ruling in March. Oura then filed a patent-infringement suit in a Texas federal court in October 2026, seeking damages and a permanent injunction to block US sales of the Ring PRO; Ultrahuman’s CEO told Wareable that “There is no court order affecting Ring Pro, and it remains available to customers in the US.”

What about Samsung’s Galaxy Ring? Samsung’s product page lists it “From $299.99 before trade-in,” but its US buy page showed “Currently not in stock” when checked on November 1, 2026. It is not a gift for an iPhone owner: Samsung’s spec sheet lists compatibility as “Android 11 or higher and with more than 1.5GB of memory.” Its Energy Score insights also need a compatible Samsung Galaxy AI phone.

Who should skip it

  • You won’t pay $69.99 a year. Without the membership the app shows only your three daily scores, the ring’s battery, basic settings and Explore content, so buy the RingConn Gen 3 instead.
  • The ring size is a guess. If you can’t find out the person’s size, give the sizing kit first and the ring after.
  • You’d buy secondhand or from an unauthorized seller. Oura’s warranty covers products bought from its online store or authorized retailers, and it excludes “Secondhand purchases from an unauthorized reseller.”

Paying with HSA or FSA funds

Oura says the ring and its membership are HSA and FSA eligible. Its support page says most items on Oura’s online store qualify, but the two-year and three-year Extend Protection Plans do not, and some authorized retailers may accept HSA or FSA cards while eligibility varies. For a gift, the same page notes that under US federal law these funds “can only be used to purchase products for the account holder or their eligible dependents,” and gift recipients cannot claim reimbursement for a ring someone else bought. Eligibility rules vary by plan or employer, so check with your provider first.

Smart ring questions

Does the Oura Ring need a subscription?

In practice, yes. The Oura Membership is $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US, and without it the app shows only your three daily scores, the ring’s battery, basic settings and Explore content.

How much does an Oura Ring cost over three years?

A silver or black Oura Ring 5 is $399, and three years of the annual membership adds $209.97, for $608.97. The other Ring 5 finishes are $499, or $708.97 over three years.

Should I buy the Oura Ring 5 or Ring 4?

The Ring 5 for most people: Oura says it is 40% smaller than the Ring 4, with 6 to 9 days of battery against the Ring 4’s 5 to 8. The Ring 4 makes sense if you want to save $50 on a silver ring, or if you need a size below 6 or above 13.

Is there a smart ring with no required subscription?

Yes. RingConn sells the Gen 3 for $349 with “No Subscription Required,” and Ultrahuman sells the Ring PRO for $479 with no recurring fees for your data, though it offers an optional Ultrahuman Max plan for extras.

Who pays the membership if I give an Oura Ring as a gift?

The person you give it to. They enter payment details when they pair the ring and, as a new member, are billed after the free month; if you add a prepaid annual membership when you buy the ring on Oura’s online store, billing starts after that prepaid year instead.

What if the ring size is wrong?

Rings bought on Oura’s online store can be returned or exchanged within 30 days of arriving, and exchanges are for a different size of the same ring; you get one return or exchange per ring. To avoid the problem, use Oura’s sizing kit and wear the sizer for at least 24 hours first.
