If your iPhone 18 Pro Max is on AT&T and shows “SOS” where the signal bars should be, a software update will not bring it back. Apple confirmed on October 2, 2026 that phones which have already lost service need a hardware replacement.
If your phone still works, two updates are meant to help keep it that way. Install both now.
What Apple Confirmed
Apple’s statement to 9to5Mac reads: “We have identified an issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network that may cause a device to lose service and be unable to make calls.”
Apple said it released iOS 27.0.1, an update to the iPhone’s operating system, “earlier this week” and issued a carrier settings update on October 2. The statement ends: “These updates together are meant to help prevent this issue from occurring.”
Prevention is all they are meant to do. 9to5Mac reports that the updates “will not restore service on devices that have already lost it,” and that owners in that position “will need a hardware replacement.”
Apple told MacRumors it has only observed the issue with iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T. MacRumors adds that no other iPhone models or carriers are known to be affected, and that Apple did not disclose the cause.
What to Do Now
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T, stuck on SOS | Updates will not fix it. Contact Apple Support or AT&T, or visit an Apple Store or AT&T store, and ask for a replacement. |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T, service drops and comes back | Install both updates and contact Apple or AT&T now. AT&T says anyone who has had issues can go to an Apple or AT&T store for support. |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T, still working | Install iOS 27.0.1 and check for the carrier settings update. |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max on another carrier | Apple has seen the issue on AT&T only. It still urges every iPhone 18 Pro Max owner to install iOS 27.0.1. |
| Smaller iPhone 18 Pro, or waiting on the iPhone Duo | 9to5Mac reports the iPhone 18 Pro is unaffected. It and the Duo use Apple’s C2 modem, though Apple has not said the modem is the cause. |
The table follows Apple’s guidance as 9to5Mac and MacRumors reported it. The second row follows AT&T’s statement to MacRumors, because Apple’s guidance does not cover service that comes and goes. The modem details are from an earlier MacRumors report.
To install iOS 27.0.1, open Settings, then General, then Software Update. The carrier settings update downloads on its own to iPhone 18 Pro Max phones on AT&T within 14 days of October 2, according to Apple, and you can trigger it sooner by opening Settings, then General, then About. MacRumors reported the AT&T version released on October 2 as 72.1, and that the About screen shows yours next to your carrier’s name.
The release notes for iOS 27.0.1 did not mention the AT&T issue, and MacRumors reported that many affected users said the update did not resolve it. On October 2, Apple began requiring iOS 27.0.1 to set up an iPhone 18 Pro Max, MacRumors reported.
Is the Replacement Free?
Apple’s statement does not say who pays. MacRumors wrote on October 2 that “it sounds like Apple Stores will replace affected iPhone 18 Pro Max devices for free,” suggested booking a Genius Bar appointment, and said it is unclear whether Apple will open a dedicated service program. That reading covers Apple Stores, not AT&T stores.
That morning, before Apple had commented, MacRumors reported that some customers said their request for a replacement under warranty was declined. If you were turned away earlier, go back and cite Apple’s October 2 guidance that phones which have lost service need a hardware replacement.
The Return Window Closed for Launch-Day Buyers
Apple’s U.S. policy says: “You have 14 calendar days to return an item from the date you received it.” The iPhone 18 Pro Max launched on September 18, and MacRumors noted that October 2 was the final return day for people who bought or received it on launch day. That is the same day Apple confirmed the fault.
If your phone arrived later, count 14 days from delivery; you may still be inside the window. The policy covers phones bought directly from Apple. A phone bought from AT&T or another retailer goes back under that seller’s policy. Apple also warns that returning an iPhone “may not automatically cancel or reset your wireless account.”
AT&T Says 911 Calls Can Fail
AT&T’s statement to MacRumors on October 2, issued before Apple had commented, names 911: “Apple has released a software update to address an issue that may affect calls, data, texts, and 911 calls on a small number of Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max phones.” A day earlier, AT&T texted customers that “Some phones may be unable to complete calls/text/data, including to 911.”
Both companies call the group “a small number” and neither statement gives a figure. MacRumors, going by complaint threads on the Apple Support Community, Reddit and its own forums, put it at “at least thousands of users.”
If an iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T is your only line, keep a second way to call for help until both updates are installed, and until any affected phone is replaced.
Why Only This Model?
Apple has not said. One hardware difference: the U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 modem, the chip that connects a phone to the cell network, which MacRumors says a TechInsights teardown confirmed. The smaller iPhone 18 Pro and the folding iPhone Duo use Apple’s own C2 modem worldwide, and so does the iPhone 18 Pro Max in every other country.
The modem is not a confirmed cause. MacRumors writes that it is “unclear if this modem difference is a factor”. Two reported facts cut against blaming the chip alone. Apple has seen the problem on AT&T only. And the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max use the same Snapdragon X80 worldwide. The modem is not the only difference, though: TechInsights also noted a newly identified Apple antenna module for high-frequency fifth-generation (5G) service in the U.S. iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Is the iPhone 18 Pro Bending?
Not in the durability test GSMArena covered. It reported on September 21 that in the JerryRigEverything YouTube channel’s test, “the iPhone 18 Pro doesn’t bend at all.” That result is stated for the iPhone 18 Pro, not the Pro Max.
