Tesla Tire Pressure: Right PSI and the Cold-Morning Alert

The right pressure for your Tesla is the number on the door-pillar label, and the car repeats it on the screen. The manual says tires lose about one psi for every 10°F drop, and the low-pressure alert fires when a tire is 20 percent under that label. Run the math and a correctly filled tire cannot reach the alert until about minus 8°F, which means the warning on a 30°F morning is a tire that was already low in summer.

A cold morning in fall, and the screen shows an orange tire with the message that air pressure is below recommendation. The tires look fine. Nothing hissed. The manual’s answer is short, and its own numbers say something owners routinely get wrong: the cold did not do this on its own.

The short answer: the right pressure is the one on the Tire and Loading Information label on the driver’s door pillar, and the car repeats that number on the touchscreen; the app shows what each tire is at. Tires “lose approximately one PSI for every 10° F (6° C) drop in outside temperature,” in the manual’s words. The low-pressure alert fires when a tire is “at least 20% lower than the recommended cold tire pressure.” Put those two sentences together for a label that reads 42 psi and the alert line sits at 33.6 psi, a tire correctly filled at 70°F does not reach it until about minus 8°F, and a warning on a 30°F morning is a tire that was already 4 or 5 psi low before the weather turned. What tire pressure should a Tesla have?

Whatever the label says, and the manual is firm that the label outranks everything else: “Keep tires inflated to the pressures shown on the Tire and Loading Information label, even if it differs from the pressure printed on the tire itself. The Tire and Loading Information label is located on the center door pillar and is visible when the driver door is open.” The Vehicle Loading page explains what that label carries: “The cold inflation pressures for the original front and rear tires. These pressures are recommended to optimize ride and handling characteristics.” The number on the tire’s sidewall is a maximum, not a recommendation; the Department of Energy’s maintenance page says the same thing for every car: “Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tire’s sidewall.”

You do not have to open the door to find it. The manual: “Tire pressures display on the touchscreen in the cards area on the car status display, or by touching Controls > Service. The pressure of each tire displays in the visualization of your Model 3, in addition to what time your tire pressures were last measured. The touchscreen also displays your vehicle’s recommended cold tire pressures so you can easily determine how much to inflate your tires.” The same page adds: “You can also view tire pressures in the Tesla mobile app,” with the note that “You may need to drive briefly before the visualization displays the tire pressure values.”

The manual has no psi-by-model table. The Wheels and Tires specification page lists wheel sizes, tire sizes and lug-nut torque and then says only: “Tire pressures vary depending on the type of tires fitted. Refer to the tire pressures printed on the Tire and Loading Information label.” The one psi figure Tesla prints is a special case: the Model Y towing section says that “When towing a trailer, tire pressures must be adjusted to accommodate the additional load,” sets 42 psi (290 kPa) cold for both the 255/45R19 and 255/40R20 tires, and adds that “if different, these pressures override the pressures that are provided on the Tire and Loading Information Label.” That is a trailer figure, not the label’s. The label on the site’s 2019 Model 3 reads 42 psi, and 42 is the worked example on this page for that reason only; substitute your own label’s number, the math is the same.

Why does Tesla tire pressure drop in cold weather?

Because air contracts. The manual’s note is the whole explanation: “Your vehicle’s tire pressures will drop in cold ambient temperatures. If the TPMS indicator light appears, inflate the tires before driving. The tires will lose approximately one PSI for every 10° F (6° C) drop in outside temperature. Proper tire pressures help protect tires from potholes and improve range when properly inflated.” The 2017-2023 Model 3 manual, which covers the site’s own car, carries the same sentence word for word.

The one-psi-per-ten-degrees figure is not a Tesla quirk. It is the gas law. A sealed tire holds a fixed amount of air, so its absolute pressure scales with its absolute temperature; the gauge reads absolute pressure minus the 14.7 psi of the atmosphere. For a tire set to 42 psi on the gauge at 70°F, the absolute pressure is 56.7 psi, and at any other temperature the gauge reads

with TT in degrees Fahrenheit. That works out to 1.07 psi per 10°F, which is what the manual rounds to one. The table below is that formula and nothing else.

Two things to read off it. One: a September fill at 70°F is a 4-psi shortfall by the morning it freezes; that is expected, and the manual says to top it up rather than live with it. Two, and this is the part that matters for the alert: a tire filled correctly in warm weather is still 34.5 psi at 0°F. Cold alone does not get a good tire anywhere near flat.

How low does the pressure have to be for the Tesla alert?

The manual gives two alerts with two different rules, and quoting them settles the questions people type.

The everyday one is what you see on cold mornings. The manual lists it as VCSEC_a221, “Air pressure below recommendation for tires: Check pressure and refill air as needed,” and its explanation reads: “This alert does NOT indicate that there is a flat tire. The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) has detected that the air pressure in one or more of your tires is at least 20% lower than the recommended cold tire pressure.” The next sentence names the season: “This alert may appear in cold weather because the air in your tires naturally contracts when it becomes cold, decreasing tire pressures.”

The other is the emergency one. VCSEC_a228, “Air pressure in tires very low: PULL OVER SAFELY - Check for flat tire,” means “one or more of the tires on your vehicle is extremely low or flat,” and it does not clear on a percentage: “The alert should clear once the Tire Pressure Monitoring System has a consistent tire pressure measurement for each of your tires of at least 30 psi.”

Behind both sits a federal floor. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) rule, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 138, requires the car to illuminate the low-pressure telltale not more than 20 minutes after a tire “is equal to or less than either the pressure 25 percent below the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended cold inflation pressure, or the pressure specified in the 3rd column of Table 1 of this standard for the corresponding type of tire, whichever is higher.” Tesla’s 20 percent rule is tighter than the law’s 25 percent, which is the manufacturer’s choice; the standard sets a ceiling on how long the car may wait, not a floor on how early it may warn.

The percentages and the 30 psi and 34 psi figures are the manual’s and the regulation’s own; the right-hand column is the gas-law formula above applied to each. The formula’s 1.07 psi per 10°F is slightly steeper than the manual’s rounded one-per-ten, so the manual’s rule puts every crossing a little colder still (the alert line at about −14°F instead of −8°F); either way, no correctly filled tire meets the alert in weather most owners will ever park in.

Here is the math the forum threads are missing. Run the formula backwards: for a tire to sit at 33.6 psi on a 30°F morning, it had to be about 37.5 psi at 70°F. At 40°F, about 36.5 psi. So an alert on an ordinary fall morning is a tire that was already 4.5 to 5.5 psi under the label before the cold arrived, most often because nobody checked it since spring. The cold is the messenger. The manual’s own advice for a repeat offender is the tell: “If you repeatedly see this alert for the same tire, have the tire inspected for a slow leak.”

Does the Tesla tire pressure warning go away on its own?

Often, and the manual says not to take that as an answer. On the cold-weather alert: “The alert may clear as the vehicle is driven. This is because the tires will warm up and the tire pressure will increase. Even if the alert clears, the tires should still be refilled with air once they have cooled.” The reason is the same physics in reverse; the manual warns that “It takes only about 1 mile (1.6 km) of driving to warm up the tires sufficiently to affect tire pressures,” and that “A hot tire at or below the recommended cold tire inflation pressure is dangerously under-inflated.”

What to do is one sentence: “Add air to maintain the recommended cold tire pressure. Although drops in tire pressure are expected in colder weather, the recommended cold tire pressure should be maintained at all times.” The Cold Weather page of the Model 3 manual repeats the instruction: “If the TPMS indicator light appears, inflate the tires before driving.”

How do you reset the tire pressure warning on a Tesla?

On a car with wheel sensors you do not; you drive. There is no reset button, and the manual explains why the light stays on after you have added air: “The Tire Pressure indicator light does not immediately turn off when you adjust tire pressure. After inflating the tire to the recommended pressure, you must drive over 15 mph (25 km/h) for a short amount of time to activate the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), which turns off the Tire Pressure indicator light.” The alert page gives the longer version of the same rule: “You may need to drive over 15 mph (25 km/h) for at least 10 minutes for the Tire Pressure Monitoring System to measure and report your updated tire pressures.” The clear condition is the label, not 20 percent under it: “The alert will clear once the Tire Pressure Monitoring System detects that each of your tires is inflated to the recommended cold pressure.”

So the sequence that works is fill to the label while the tires are cold, drive ten minutes above 15 mph, and let the car clear itself. The sensor-less Standard trims are the exception: Not a Tesla App’s report on those cars says that “going to Controls > Service > Tire Pressure > Calibrate will enable you to begin the calibration procedure,” that “The entire process requires about 20 minutes of driving to complete,” and that “Tesla recommends a full recalibration every time you add or remove air from the tires.” Filling to the label while the tires are warm from driving leaves them under-inflated once they cool, which is why the manual tells you to check “when tires are cold and Model 3 has been stationary for over three hours.”

Why is the tire pressure always low, or the sensor showing a fault?

Three different problems hide under this query, and the manual separates them.

The same tire, again and again. That is a leak, not weather. The alert text says so directly: “If you repeatedly see this alert for the same tire, have the tire inspected for a slow leak. You can visit a local tire shop or schedule service using your Tesla Mobile App.” The temperature table above is the test: all four tires fall together in the cold, and by the same amount. One tire falling alone is the one to pull the nail out of.

The light flashes, then stays on. That is a TPMS fault, and it is a different indicator from low pressure. The Tire Care page: “If the indicator light flashes for one minute whenever you power on Model 3, a fault with the TPMS is detected (see TPMS Malfunction). Use your mobile app to schedule a Service appointment.” Both manuals carry the federally required description: “When the system detects a malfunction, the telltale will flash for approximately one minute and then remain continuously illuminated. This sequence will continue upon subsequent vehicle start-ups as long as the malfunction exists,” and they name the usual cause, “the installation of replacement or alternate tires or wheels on the vehicle that prevent the TPMS from functioning properly.” A winter wheel set without sensors, or with sensors the car has not learned, produces exactly this.

No per-tire numbers at all. On the cheapest current trims that is by design. Not a Tesla App reported on October 16, 2025 that Tesla removed the wheel sensors from the Standard trims of the Model 3 and Model Y in favor of “Indirect TPMS, a rather clever, software-based system that requires no extra hardware in the wheels,” which “uses the car’s existing Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) wheel speed sensors” to detect a soft tire from its rotation speed. The consequence, in the same report: “You will no longer be able to see the specific, real-time pressure (PSI) of each individual tire.” Those cars still warn on under-inflation; they simply cannot tell you 36 versus 42, so the gauge in the glovebox does the job the screen used to.

Does tire pressure affect a Tesla’s range?

Yes, by a small, real amount, and the honest numbers come with a label of their own. Tesla’s manual says only that proper pressures “improve range when properly inflated” and that “Under-inflation also reduces the vehicle’s range and tire tread life.” The Department of Energy’s cold-weather page adds the mechanism: “Tire pressure decreases in colder temperatures, increasing rolling resistance,” and its short list of winter advice includes “Check your tire pressure regularly.”

The only quantified figure comes from the DOE’s maintenance page, and it was measured on gasoline cars: “Under-inflated tires can lower gas mileage by about 0.2% for every 1 psi drop in the average pressure of all tires,” and keeping tires at the proper pressure improves mileage “by 0.6% on average—up to 3% in some cases.” Applied to the 4-psi drop in the temperature table, that rule of thumb is on the order of one percent of range. Rolling resistance is rolling resistance whatever turns the wheels, but no EV-specific version of that per-psi figure exists in these sources, so treat it as the shape of the effect, not a Tesla number. When should you check, and should you go above the label in winter?

Cold, and no. The manual’s checking procedure starts with the conditions: “Follow these steps when tires are cold and Model 3 has been stationary for over three hours,” and then the label: “Refer to the Tire and Loading Information label located on the driver’s center door pillar for the target tire pressure.” The warning on warm tires is explicit: “If you must check warm tires, expect increased pressures. Do not let air out of warm tires in an attempt to match recommended cold tire pressures.”

Nothing in the manual tells you to add a winter margin above the label. Its instruction is to keep the label pressure “at all times” and to refill when the cold takes it down, which in practice means checking monthly and after every big temperature swing. The federally required paragraph in both manuals gives the cadence: “Each tire, including the spare (if provided), should be checked monthly when cold and inflated to the inflation pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label.” Tesla’s public do-it-yourself page repeats the same cold-tire procedure, three hours stationary and the label as the target. What the orange tire is telling you

It is a report, not a diagnosis, and the manual’s two sentences cover the whole of it: the cold takes a psi for every ten degrees, and the car speaks up at 20 percent under the label. Do the subtraction on the morning it appears. If the number on the screen is where the table says a good tire should be, add air and drive; if it is lower than that, or it is one tire and not four, you were low before the frost, and the gauge, not the weather, is what to check next.
