Which Apple Watch Should You Buy? SE 3, Series 12 or Ultra 4

Apple sells three Apple Watch lines after its September 9, 2026 event: the $249 SE 3, the $399 Series 12 and the $799 Ultra 4. Most iPhone owners should buy the SE 3. The Series 12 earns its extra $150 for the health sensors and the nicer watch; the Ultra 4 only for multi-day battery, diving and satellite.

Apple sells three Apple Watch lines as of September 10, 2026, plus the Hermès editions: the Apple Watch SE 3 from $249, the Apple Watch Series 12 from $399, and the Apple Watch Ultra 4 from $799. Most iPhone owners should buy the SE 3. It has the always-on display, the fall and crash detection, the sleep score and the temperature sensor, and it costs $150 less than the Series 12. What the extra money buys on the Series 12 is a specific list: the ECG app, blood oxygen, hypertension notifications, the new heart sensor that reads every five seconds, a screen twice as bright, and about six more hours of battery. Buy the Ultra 4 only if you want a watch that lasts two days, dives, or sends messages by satellite. Last year’s Series 11 and Ultra 3 are no longer sold new on Apple’s store. Every price here is Apple’s list price on its U.S. store as of September 10, 2026; the new models are on pre-order and reach stores September 18. Amazon links are affiliate links.

Quick picks

  • Most iPhone owners: Apple Watch SE 3, from $249. The safety features, the always-on screen and the sleep tracking, for the least money. Check price on Amazon.
  • Health features, or simply a nicer watch: Apple Watch Series 12, from $399. ECG, blood oxygen, hypertension notifications, the new Health Sensing System, a 2000-nit screen and Ceramic Shield 2 glass on the aluminum cases. Check the 42mm on Amazon or the 46mm.
  • Battery, diving and the backcountry: Apple Watch Ultra 4, $799. Apple claims up to 50 hours of normal use, 100-meter water resistance, a dive rating to 40 meters and satellite messaging. See it on Apple’s store.
  • For a parent who lives alone: SE 3 or Series 12 with GPS + Cellular. Fall Detection can call emergency services by itself; Apple says it “requires a satellite connection, cellular connection, or Wi-Fi Calling with an internet connection from your Apple Watch or nearby iPhone,” so cellular is what makes the call work away from home Wi-Fi and the phone.
  • For a kid without an iPhone: Apple Watch SE 3 with GPS + Cellular, from $299. Apple’s own recommendation for its Apple Watch For Your Kids setup.

Every Apple Watch Apple sells, side by side

All figures are from Apple’s spec pages and store as of September 10, 2026. Battery figures are Apple’s claims from Apple’s tests, not independent measurements.

Two things the table hides. First, the SE 3 and the Series 12 share more than the price gap suggests: both get watchOS 27, both have the always-on display, both do sleep stages, sleep score and sleep apnea notifications, both have the temperature sensor and the Vitals app, and both carry Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, Crash Detection and Check In. Beyond the health list, the Series 12 also adds a depth gauge to 6 meters, a water temperature sensor, IP6X dust resistance, a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip and 5GHz Wi-Fi, none of which the SE 3 spec page lists. Second, the Ultra 4’s battery claim is not a rounding difference. Apple rates it at more than double the Series 12 for normal use and says a 15-minute charge adds up to 18 hours, against up to 12 hours for the Series 12 and up to 8 for the SE 3.

Most iPhone owners: Apple Watch SE 3

The SE 3 is the right answer for anyone who wants notifications, workouts, sleep tracking and the safety net, and does not want to think about the watch after that. Its spec sheet lists the S10 chip, an Always-On Retina display, a second-generation optical heart sensor, a temperature sensor, high and low heart rate notifications, irregular rhythm notifications, the Sleep app with sleep stages and sleep score, sleep apnea notifications, and the core safety set: Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Backtrack and Check In. It is water resistant to 50 meters, which Apple calls swimproof.

What it does not have is just as specific. The SE 3 spec page lists no ECG app, no Blood Oxygen app, no hypertension notifications, no Readiness app, no recovery HRV and no high-frequency background heart rate tracking, and it uses Apple’s Ion-X front glass, which Apple rates at 4x crack resistance, with a 1000-nit peak, half the Series 12’s brightness. Apple rates its battery at up to 18 hours of normal use, and only up to 7 hours of that as an outdoor workout with GPS running. It is also thicker: 10.7mm against 9.7mm for the aluminum Series 12.

Prices on Apple’s store: $249 for the 40mm, $279 for the 44mm, and GPS + Cellular from $299. If those missing features mean nothing to you, stop here and check the SE 3 on Amazon. The smartwatch pros and cons guide already picked the SE 3 as the iPhone default before the September event, and Apple did not replace the SE.

Health features, or a nicer watch: Apple Watch Series 12

The Series 12 is two upgrades in one case. The first is health hardware. Apple’s spec page lists the new Health Sensing System with a second-generation electrical heart sensor, an always-on optical sensor, a blood oxygen sensor and a temperature sensor, and on top of that the ECG app, the Blood Oxygen app, hypertension notifications, heart rate variability in the Vitals app, and a new Readiness app. In Apple’s words, the watch “now measures heart rate every five seconds, all day long,” heart rate variability “is now measured up to 24 times more often,” and readiness “provides a single 0-10 score with a clear, actionable recommendation: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It.” Apple also calls it “the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable,” citing its own study of over 1,000 participants; that is Apple’s claim about Apple’s own test.

The second upgrade is the watch itself. The aluminum models get Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is “60 percent tougher than the Ion-X glass on Apple Watch Series 11,” the display peaks at 2000 nits, the aluminum and titanium cases are 9.7mm deep (ceramic is 9.85mm), and Apple rates the battery at up to 24 hours of normal use, 38 in Low Power Mode and 10 hours of outdoor workout. Fast charging is the number to notice: Apple says 15 minutes gives up to 12 hours of normal use and five minutes gives up to 10 hours of sleep tracking, which is what makes nightly wear practical.

Prices climb with the case. On Apple’s store the aluminum Series 12 is $399 for the 42mm and $449 for the 46mm, GPS + Cellular aluminum starts at $499, and the titanium models and the new ceramic models both come with cellular, from $699 and $899. The aluminum GPS model is the one to buy unless you have a reason for cellular; the titanium and ceramic cases change the material and the front crystal, not the sensors.

One asterisk belongs on the blood oxygen line. In August 2025 Apple redesigned the U.S. Blood Oxygen feature for the Series 9, Series 10 and Ultra 2 so that sensor data is “measured and calculated on the paired iPhone,” an update Apple said “was enabled by a recent U.S. Customs ruling.” Apple has not said whether the Series 12 uses the same iPhone-calculated path; its spec page lists the sensor and the app with a footnote. Treat blood oxygen as a wellness trend line, not a reason on its own to spend $150 more.

Battery and the outdoors: Apple Watch Ultra 4

The Ultra 4 is the same S11 chip and the same Health Sensing System as the Series 12, in a 49mm titanium case built for a different life. Apple’s spec page rates it at up to 50 hours of normal use, 84 hours in Low Power Mode, 18 hours of outdoor workout, 25 hours in Extended Workout and 45 hours in Max Extended Workout, and the release says that last mode is “typically enough to finish a 100-mile race, while still taking GPS readings every second.” It is water resistant to 100 meters, rated under EN13319 for recreational scuba diving to 40 meters, tested against selected MIL-STD 810H subsections for altitude, temperature, immersion and shock, and it has a siren, a customizable Action button, dual-frequency GPS, a 3000-nit display and satellite communications for Emergency SOS, Messages and Find My, with Apple noting that Messages and Find My over satellite need a carrier plan.

It costs $799, cellular included, and weighs 63 grams, nearly double the 42mm aluminum GPS Series 12. That weight and that size are the honest test. If you run ultras, dive, hike out of cell range, or simply refuse to charge a watch every night, the Ultra 4 is the only Apple Watch that fits. If you want the health features, the Series 12 has the same Health Sensing System for $400 less; what it lacks is the dive rating, since its depth gauge is rated to 6 meters, not 40.

Which size, and do you need cellular?

Size is a wrist question, not a feature question. Apple lists the 40mm SE 3 and the 42mm Series 12 for wrists of 130 to 200mm, and the 44mm SE 3 and 46mm Series 12 for 140 to 245mm; the 49mm Ultra 4 is listed for 130 to 210mm wrists. The larger case costs $30 more on the SE 3 and $50 more on the Series 12 and buys a bigger screen; Apple publishes one battery rating per model, not a longer one for the larger size.

Cellular costs $50 extra on the SE 3 and $100 extra on the aluminum Series 12, plus whatever your carrier charges each month for the watch line. It matters in three cases. You want to leave the phone at home on runs. You are buying for an older relative and want Fall Detection’s automatic call to work beyond home Wi-Fi and Bluetooth range of the phone. Or you are setting the watch up for a child: Apple’s Apple Watch For Your Kids page says “With any GPS + Cellular Apple Watch model, your child gets their own phone number and Apple Account,” and Apple recommends “Apple Watch SE 3 with GPS + Cellular.” The parent still needs an iPhone for setup; the child does not.

What a year on the wrist teaches that the spec sheet does not

A few things only show up after months of wearing one, and none of them are numbers.

The charger becomes a habit, not a chore. Apple’s fast-charge claims are what make the habit work: an SE 3 gets up to 8 hours of sleep tracking from an 8-minute charge, and a Series 12 or Ultra 4 up to 10 hours from five minutes, so a short top-up while you shower or make coffee is enough to keep the watch on overnight for sleep. A watch that spends the night on the charger tracks no sleep; a morning top-up keeps it on the wrist.

The always-on display is the feature you will use most and think about least. It is the difference between glancing at a watch and raising a wrist, and the SE 3 has it, which is why it feels like a full Apple Watch rather than a cut-down one.

The watch replaces the phone check, not the phone. Notifications, timers, tap-to-pay and the odd reply are what it does all day; anything longer than a sentence still goes to the iPhone, and every current model requires one, an iPhone 11 or later on iOS 27.

The band ecosystem is the quiet reason people stay. Apple’s store lists bands from $49, and a new band changes the watch more than a new case color does. Buy the case you can afford and spend the leftover on a second band.

And the safety features earn their place before you ever use them. Apple’s fall detection “can help connect you to emergency services if needed,” and “if your watch detects that you’ve been immobile for about a minute, it will make the call automatically.” For an older parent, that sentence is the whole purchase.

What the September 9 event changed

Three things happened for buyers on September 9, 2026. Apple introduced the Series 12, which “starts at $399 (U.S.),” and the Ultra 4, which “starts at $799 (U.S.),” both on pre-order that day with availability in stores from Friday, September 18. The SE 3 was not replaced and still lists at $249. Apple’s store now lists the three lines above plus the Hermès editions, from $1,399, and nothing older.

The software line moved too. Apple says “watchOS 27 will be available for Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch SE 3, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later on Monday, September 14, and requires iPhone 11 or later or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later) with iOS 27 or later.” Apple describes the readiness score and the higher-frequency heart readings as features of the new Health Sensing System on the Series 12 and Ultra 4; nothing in its releases promises them to older watches. A redesigned Health app with a Longevity tab and a Health Age feature “will arrive later this year, starting in U.S. English,” on the iPhone side.

Apple Fitness+ still lists one month free for new subscribers, then $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year, and Apple’s store advertises three months free with an Apple Watch purchase. None of the picks above depends on it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Apple Watch SE 3 good enough?

For most iPhone owners, yes. It has the always-on display, the S10 chip, sleep stages and sleep score, sleep apnea notifications, the temperature sensor, irregular rhythm notifications, Fall Detection, Crash Detection and Emergency SOS, and it is swimproof to 50 meters. It lacks ECG, blood oxygen, hypertension notifications, the readiness score and the new high-frequency heart readings, has a dimmer 1000-nit screen, and Apple rates it at up to 18 hours rather than 24. If none of those is why you are buying, the SE 3 is the pick.

Series 12 vs Ultra 4: what does the extra $400 buy?

Battery and ruggedness, not health features. Both use the S11 chip and the same Health Sensing System with ECG, blood oxygen and hypertension notifications. The Ultra 4 adds a titanium 49mm case, a 3000-nit flat sapphire display, up to 50 hours of normal use against 24, 100-meter water resistance and scuba certification to 40 meters, dual-frequency GPS, a siren, an Action button and satellite messaging, with cellular included in the $799 price.

Which Apple Watch has the best battery life?

The Ultra 4, by Apple’s own ratings: up to 50 hours of normal use and 84 hours in Low Power Mode, against up to 24 and 38 hours for the Series 12 and up to 18 and 32 hours for the SE 3. Those are Apple’s figures from Apple’s tests; a full smartwatch still charges every day or two, which is why the fitness tracker guide exists for people who want days or weeks between charges.

Does the Apple Watch work with Android?

No. Every current model’s spec page lists the same compatibility line, “iPhone 11 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), with iOS 27 or later,” and even Apple Watch For Your Kids, which lets a child use a watch without their own phone, needs a parent’s iPhone for setup and management.

Should you buy a Series 11 or Ultra 3 instead?

Apple no longer sells either one new; its store lists the SE 3, Series 12 and Ultra 4 only. A discounted Series 11 or Ultra 3 from a retailer is still a supported watch, since watchOS 27 covers “Apple Watch Series 9 or later” and “Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later.” What you give up is the new Health Sensing System, the readiness score, the five-second heart readings, Ceramic Shield 2 and the longer workout battery, which Apple describes as features of the new hardware. At the same price, buy the new one; at a deep discount, last year’s watch is a fine buy for anyone who would have chosen the SE 3 anyway.

Do you need the cellular model?

Only if the watch has to work without the phone nearby: phone-free runs, an older relative who may not carry a phone, or a child with no iPhone. It costs $50 more on the SE 3 and $100 more on the aluminum Series 12, and the Ultra 4 includes it.

How to choose in sixty seconds

If you want an Apple Watch and do not know why you would pay more: SE 3, $249. If you want ECG, blood oxygen, hypertension alerts, the new heart sensor or simply the brighter, thinner, tougher watch: Series 12, $399. If you need two days of battery, a watch rated for recreational diving to 40 meters, or a satellite lifeline: Ultra 4, $799. Add cellular for a runner, a parent or a kid, and add a second band for everyone. Still deciding whether you want any smartwatch at all? Start with the should-you-buy-one case. Want days of battery instead of hours? The fitness tracker guide covers the bands and rings. Deciding on the phone at the same time? The iPhone buying guide is the sibling of this page.
