Apple's Cheapest Desktop Rose 50% in Under Two Years

Apple announced a new Mac mini on August 25, 2026, with the all-new M6 chip, and it starts at $899 with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage. The same 16GB/256GB base configuration launched at $599 on November 8, 2024, with the M4 chip. That is $300 more, a 50 percent increase, for a machine with the same amount of memory, in under two years. It is also the highest starting price the Mac mini has ever carried.

MacRumors put it both ways on launch day: $300 more than the M4’s original $599, but only $100 more than the $799 Apple re-priced the Mac mini to in June. The $100 figure is accurate and it is the less useful one: the cheapest Mac mini has cost $799 since May 1, and the specific 16GB/256GB configuration has cost $799 since June 25. Two of the three price steps happened before the M6 existed.

How much is the Mac mini M6?

Every rung has a paper trail. The M4 Mac mini launched “Starting at just $599 with 16GB of memory” and $499 for education. On May 1, 2026, Apple stopped offering a 256GB storage option for the Mac mini worldwide, so the cheapest model became the 16GB/512GB configuration that had always cost $799. On June 25, 2026, Apple raised prices across the Mac line and the 16GB/256GB option came back, at $799 rather than $599. Apple’s statement to The Wall Street Journal that day, as reported by MacRumors, was blunt: “We have now reached a point where we need to begin raising prices. The education price tells the same story faster: $499 for the M4 in 2024, $799 for the M6 now. Measured as the whole machine’s price per gigabyte of standard memory, the base Mac mini went from about $37 ($599 ÷ 16) to about $56 ($899 ÷ 16).

The Mac mini has jumped $300 once before. In October 2014 it started at $499; in October 2018, after a four-year gap, a redesigned model started at $799. That jump bought a new design and took four years. This one took less than two years, and the enclosure did not change.

What actually changed with the M6

The chip upgrade is substantial. Apple lists a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, two more cores each than the M4, plus a new Dual 16-core Neural Engine, 16GB of standard unified memory configurable to 32GB, and memory bandwidth up to 170GB/s. The M4 Mac mini’s tech specs list 120GB/s of memory bandwidth, so the M6 has roughly 42 percent more, That matters for running an LLM (the kind of AI model behind chatbots) locally: how fast a model produces text is limited mostly by how fast the chip can read memory. Both new models add Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and 2.5Gb Ethernet; the M6 has three Thunderbolt 4 ports, while the M5 Pro model (from $1,699) gets Thunderbolt 5.

Apple’s performance figures are Apple’s own, and they were measured against a specific machine. In Apple’s press release, the M6 Mac mini delivers “Up to 13.5x faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio when compared to Mac mini with M1, and up to 4.8x faster than M4,” “Up to 2.3x faster spreadsheet calculations in Microsoft Excel when compared to Mac mini with M1, and up to 1.5x faster than M4,” and “Up to 2x faster gaming performance with ray tracing in Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition when compared to Mac mini with M4.” The footnote says the M4 comparison system had 32GB of memory and a 2TB SSD, and that “Testing was conducted by Apple in July 2026.” Independent benchmarks will follow once review units ship.

What the upgrades cost

The $899 machine is the cheapest way in, and the configurator is where the real bill shows up. As of August 25, 2026, Apple’s U.S. store priced the M6 upgrades as follows: 24GB of memory adds $200, 32GB adds $400, 512GB of storage adds $200, 1TB adds $500, and 2TB adds $1,000. Put the tiers together and a 32GB/2TB M6 comes to $2,299 ($899 + $400 + $1,000). For a machine whose selling point is running AI models on device, the memory ceiling is 32GB; anything bigger means the M5 Pro model at $1,699 and up, with up to 64GB. Why it costs $899

Apple has said, on the record, that memory is the reason. On the July 30, 2026 earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said: “On the pricing front, we reluctantly raised prices, I would say. We did it because we’re in what I would characterize as a 100-year flood on the memory pricing, with exponential increases in memory prices.” He added: “If you look beyond September, we see the market pricing for memory continuing to increase, which could drive an increasing impact on our business, and we’re continuing to evaluate this.”

The market data agrees with him. TrendForce’s July 3, 2026 outlook forecast that “Conventional DRAM contract prices are forecast to rise 13–18% QoQ in 3Q26,” with NAND flash expected to increase 10–15%. Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM) is the working memory in the Mac mini; NAND is its storage. There is a second factor that Apple has described as a supply problem, not a pricing one. On its April 30, 2026 earnings call, Cook said the Mac mini and Mac Studio “may take several months to reach supply demand balance,” and that “Both of these are amazing platforms for AI and agentic tools and the customer recognition of that is happening faster than what we had predicted, and so we saw higher than expected demand.” Apple has attributed its price increases to memory costs and nothing else. The inference is this article’s, not Apple’s: a product that sells out at $599 does not need to be $599, and a machine Apple could not keep in stock gave the company room to pass through more than the memory bill alone.

Apple did eat one of these bumps itself. The M2 Mac mini also started at $599 when it launched in January 2023, and the M4 held that $599 price in 2024 while raising standard memory to 16GB, so Apple absorbed one memory bump before passing on the next. And Apple’s memory-heavier Pro machines went up too, with the M4 Pro Mac mini rising from $1,399 at launch to $1,599 in June. The whole lineup moved, not just the entry desktop.

Should you buy a discounted M4 instead?

For most people, yes, if you can find one. The M4 Mac mini is the machine Apple could not keep in stock this spring, so discounts are not guaranteed, but retailers will clear M4 inventory as the M6 arrives. The M4’s 16GB/256GB configuration was designed to sell at $599; at anything near that price you get the same 16GB of memory and the same enclosure, minus the newer chip and wireless standards.

Buy the M6 if you run local AI models. Apple’s “up to 4.8x faster” figure covers prompt processing, the step where the model reads your input, and it is Apple’s own number. The 170GB/s versus 120GB/s memory bandwidth is a spec, and bandwidth is what sets how fast a local model writes its answer. If you go M6, buy memory from Apple and storage from anyone else: Thunderbolt 4 external SSDs are far cheaper than $500 for the jump to 1TB.

When does it ship?

Pre-orders opened August 25, 2026, and Apple says the new Mac mini will begin arriving to customers and in stores on September 22. The M6’s memory bandwidth and Neural Engine claims get their first outside test the week reviewers receive units, and the price ladder gets its next test after September, the point beyond which Cook said Apple sees market memory pricing “continuing to increase.”
