Tesla Model Y L: Price, Range and How Big the Third Row Is

The Tesla Model Y L is the stretched, six-seat Model Y: two front seats, two captain’s chairs in the middle and two seats in a third row. On October 14, 2026, Tesla’s US configurator listed it in one version, the Model Y L Premium with the Launch Series badge, at $61,990, with 332 miles of EPA-estimated range on its 19-inch wheels. That price makes it the most expensive Model Y, $4,000 above the Performance.

The other number to know is the size of the third row, and Tesla now publishes it. The owner’s manual gives the Model Y L’s third row 31.0 inches of legroom and 38.1 inches of headroom, against 25.8 and 34.6 inches in the seven-seat Model Y Premium. Four of the six seats have LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) car seat anchors.

How much is the Tesla Model Y L?

The Model Y L costs $12,000 more than the five-seat Model Y Premium all-wheel drive and $22,000 more than the cheapest Model Y. Those are the vehicle prices the configurator showed with the cash option selected, before any options. On October 19, Tesla’s comparison tool put the Launch Series at $63,630 “including the Destination and Order fees but excluding taxes and other fees.”

The Launch Series price includes extras. On October 14 the configurator listed “12 mo FSD With Launch Series”, meaning 12 months of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), with a $99-a-month subscription after the trial; a tow hitch rated to 3,500 pounds, which was a $1,000 option on the base Model Y the same day; an Outlet Adapter, listed under Power Devices for use with the Mobile Connector; and, in its charging section, 12 months of free Supercharging. Not a Tesla App’s July list of Launch Series perks also included the year of free Supercharging, plus a year of Premium Connectivity and a free choice of paint, interior and wheels. The October 14 configurator did not list Premium Connectivity, and showed one interior and one wheel, the 19-inch Machina 2.0. On October 19, Tesla’s comparison tool, which the October 14 reading did not open, listed “12 months of Premium Connectivity included ($9.99/mo subscription after)” for the Model Y L and gave its wheel options as the 19-inch Machina 2.0 and a 20-inch Uberhelix; the interior was still the single All Black Premium Interior. The Model Y trim guide has the owner’s manual’s towing limits, which fall to 2,300 pounds with six people aboard.

There is no cheaper Model Y L yet. Tesla opened US orders on July 2 with the Launch Series only, and Electrek noted that Tesla has opened other new variants the same way, with a loaded version first “before rolling out cheaper trims.” Not a Tesla App wrote at launch that “There is no official word yet on how long the Launch Series will be available for or when a stripped-down standard trim might arrive.” On October 14 and again on October 19 the configurator listed the Launch Series alone.

Model Y L range

The range figures have moved since launch. Tesla claimed 325 miles in July; by mid-October its configurator showed 332 on the same 19-inch wheels, and the EPA’s own listing, for the 2027 model year on 20-inch wheels, says 328 miles; the October 14 build page showed no 20-inch wheel, and Tesla’s comparison tool listed a 20-inch Uberhelix on October 19. No EPA listing for the 19-inch car turned up, so 332 is Tesla’s own estimate. Both figures sit slightly above the 327 miles the EPA gives the 2026 Model Y Long Range all-wheel drive, the EPA’s five-seat Long Range all-wheel drive. Tesla’s configurator uses different trim names (Model Y, Model Y Premium and Performance, with three all-wheel-drive five-seaters), and on October 19 it showed 327 miles (EPA est.) for the Model Y Premium all-wheel drive.

Efficiency is where the bigger car shows. The EPA rates the 2027 Model Y L on 20-inch wheels at 114 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent), or 30 kWh (kilowatt-hours) per 100 miles, against 123 MPGe, or 27 kWh, for the 2026 Model Y Long Range all-wheel drive, so it uses roughly 8% more electricity per mile on the MPGe figures. Not a Tesla App listed the Model Y L’s battery at 83 kWh at launch.

How big is the Model Y L third row?

Tesla’s manual publishes interior dimensions for every row. The table sets the Model Y L’s third row beside the seven-seat Model Y Premium’s and the six-seat Model X’s, from Tesla’s current manuals.

The Model Y L’s third row has 5.2 inches more legroom and 3.5 inches more headroom than the seven-seat Model Y’s, and comes within 1.3 inches of a six-seat Model X on legroom while beating it on headroom. In the second row, the Model Y L’s captain’s chairs have 0.8 inches less legroom than the five-seat Model Y Premium’s bench (39.7 against 40.5 inches), but more headroom, shoulder room and hip room. Whether 31 inches is enough for an adult on a long drive depends on the adult, so sit in one before you order if adults will ride back there.

The car around it is 195.6 inches long, 7.0 inches longer than the five-seat Model Y Premium, on a wheelbase 5.9 inches longer (119.7 against 113.8 inches), and it is 1.5 inches taller at 65.5 inches. It is no wider: 75.6 inches without mirrors, the same as the five-seater. Measure your garage for the length, not the width.

Cargo space

With all six seats in use, 14.8 cubic feet is what is left behind the third row (18.9 counting the front trunk), the same behind-the-third-row figure Tesla gives for a six-seat Model X.

Car seats in the Model Y L

The Model Y manual says “Lower LATCH anchors are provided in the second and third row outboard seats,” and that for the six-seater, “Infants and children can occupy a third row seat using belt-based, or LATCH child restraint systems.” That is four seats with anchors, against two in a five-seat Model Y, and every one of them is a window seat, so no child seat has to go in a belt-only middle position.

Two details need care. The second-row chairs have their own top tether routing in the manual: head support lowered, strap over the top, hook “fully seated on the anchor point located at the bottom half of the seat back.” In Australia and New Zealand, the safety rater ANCAP (the Australasian New Car Assessment Program) found that in the second row “many restraints could not be correctly installed due to limitations with top tether routing,” and that in the third row “rearward-facing and forward-facing convertible child restraints could not be easily installed using the ISOFix anchorages.” ANCAP tested child restraints sold in Australia and New Zealand, and US seat models may differ; in the US, follow Tesla’s routing and your seat maker’s instructions. In the third row the manual also lists infants and children, not the larger children it allows in the second row, and warns against using a car seat’s side support device there. Is the Model Y L a seven-seater?

No. It seats six, in a 2+2+2 layout; Electrek described it at launch as “a 2+2+2, six-seat layout rather than a squeezed-in seven-seat bench.” Tesla’s current US manual also lists a seven-seat Model Y Premium, with a smaller third row, and Electrek reported that Tesla added a third-row option to the regular, non-L Model Y in the US in January. On October 19 Tesla’s configurator offered a Seven Seat Layout as a $2,500 option on the Model Y Premium all-wheel drive only. Tesla’s manual allows only belt-installed child seats in the seven-seater’s third row.

Model Y L battery warranty

Tesla’s warranty page puts the “Model Y L Premium Launch Series” in its 120,000-mile battery tier, the middle one of three (the Model S, Model X and Cybertruck get 150,000 miles): “8 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first, with minimum 70% retention of Battery capacity over the warranty period.” The base rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive Model Y sit in the 100,000-mile tier. Tesla’s page adds that it “should only be used for general knowledge,” so the warranty booklet that comes with the car is the one that counts.

Who the Model Y L is for

Buy it if you need a third row more often than occasionally, want car seats in four positions without using a middle seat, and want Tesla’s Supercharger network. Its range figures are slightly above the EPA’s for the 2026 five-seat Long Range all-wheel drive.

Skip it if a third row is a once-a-year need: the five-seat Model Y Premium all-wheel drive is $12,000 less. If price matters most, Electrek’s July 2 launch report put the Kia EV9’s starting price at $54,900 and the Hyundai Ioniq 9’s at $58,955, both below the Model Y L; check Kia’s and Hyundai’s current prices. And if you would rather not pay for the Launch Series extras, know that no cheaper Model Y L was listed on October 14, and there was no official word on one at launch.
